Howdy folks!

Sleeved 2/19. Never had a issue with acid reflux. I wake up with heartburn every morning. Goes away with mild flare ups some days. Surgeon doesn't want me to take Omerprazole daily, says it will stretch out the pouch. Anybody else have this issue and suggestions? It isn't horrible. Maybe I just need to live with it?

I;m not so sure about the stretching your sleeve and what omeprazole has to do with that, but I do respect much of what Dr. Roslin says, so there may be something there. It may also be the general concern about using PPI's such as omeprazole long term, which is something that we would like to avoid.

As an alternative, try one of the over the counter H2 inhibitors such as Zantac or Pepcid, which are generally friendlier to us than PPIs though not as strong or long lasting. They are, however, reputedly better for overnight reflux, so may just be what you need.

Thanks for starting this topic. I'm currently on omeprazole twice a day so I'm very interested in the responses!

I was told to take omeprazole for 3 months after surgery and actigall for 6 months.

Same, except substitute pantoprazole, lol.

PPIs will not stretch your sleeve (you don’t have a pouch) but uncontrolled acid could cause lesions on your esophagus which could lead to Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer.

I developed uncontrolled acid about 8 months after my VSG after never having an issue prior to surgery. I was on PPIs for a year before I had to revise to RNY since the PPIs didn’t control my acid and I had developed lesions from the acid. The meds didn’t stretch my sleeve and I was at goal at that time of my revision. In my opinion, if I had heartburn every single day there’s no way in this world I wouldn’t be taking Omeprazole every single day. If you’re concerned maybe consult with a gastroenterologist. Also in my opinion your surgeon’s advice is crap.

I had same thing. Only way to make that stop is to have the bypass bcus the dr told me the area of the stomach that makes the acid is in the lower area and it would have to be removed. I’m having my surgery tomorrow! I can’t wait. I couldnt live like that. It was getting increasingly worse and the long term results are worse. Good luck to you

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
