Can I still qualify for VSG with mild GERD?

Recommended Posts

I am in the last month of my weight loss classes to meet medical necessity and my bariatric rider states that I need to have one comorbidity on top of having a BMI over 40. I got diagnosed with GERD in December and was wondering if that would help me meet that criteria? Although I do understand that some docs dont want you getting the surgery if you do have GERD. What do you all think?

Trust the knowledge of your surgeon, GERD has been know to get worse with VSG but cured with RNY (not always a rule though)

If it gets worse you may need a revision

I am having VSG tomorrow and I have GERD. Although some doctors recommend Gastric bypassbecause it cures GERD, it has more potential complications. My surgeon said that since myGERD is caused by my obesity, it will go away once I lose weight.

And if it doesn't go away I will be able to get a revision.

Not sure it helps with insurance, but gerd is often caused by a hiatal hernia, which is fixed during surgery. I had mild GERD and a VSG and it’s been totally gone since surgery

I had GERD pre-surgery and was still able to get it.

Post-surgery, I'm not sure if I have it anymore, but I'm not brave enough to stop taking Prilosec just yet. My doctor told me it can inhibit absorption of Vitamins and minerals, so I should probably try giving it up.

Absolutely!! Many, many, MANY people go into surgery with GERD (me, I had it BAD for years), and come out of surgery never to see it again (yay!! That alone was worth doing it!). It's the people who never had it before who sometimes develop it afterward.

I had terrible GERD before surgery and my surgeon said he would prefer to do bypass because that pretty much cures GERD. However, my insurance wouldn’t cover bypass initially. It covered VSG and then if I still had bad GERD it would cover bypass. So, my Dr said he would do the sleeve as long as I understood that I may still need a revision to bypass if the GERD was worse. Thankfully, I am 4 months out and no GERD!!

I had sleeve in 4/3 because md told me even though the GERD would get worse for a little while, it would go away as i lose weight. He talked me out of the RNY . Well.... he was right. The GERD has definitely gotten worse.

Don't we all, I'm sorta like that myself today. I was just lying here, with sinusitis from Hades, been through 4 antibiotics and my nose is still dripping yet my head still feels stuffy. Tomorrow morning I have to go have a head and sinus Xray[emoji37] I love reading everybody's story. Cheer with them at victories, empathize at each sorrow and still down deep jealous as snarf they've had their surgery and. I still havent! And if by some miracle I'd get a call, no surgeon is gonna do me with a drippy nose. Imagine telling the anesthesia[emoji40] guy Wait a minute until I blow my nose! Probably isn't going to happen until May but I'm impatient. Told them, folks, I am not getting any younger, I'm blaming you for my lines and crows feet[emoji70][emoji30] Sniff sniff!

No durn it! I come with quite a story or emotional baggage, depending on how you take it. I have been through prerequirements not once but twice. After all that the 3 surgeons in that bariatric practice took a little vote and decided not to do my surgery. So I took my little hand and waved Bye Bye after being in their programs since August 2015. Now I am setting forth with attempt#3. I have an appointment with OSU staff psychologist Dr Kramer on April 25th. Depending on his approval, and who would turn down a sweet lady like myself, besides those 3 sons of Seabiscuit the Horse I was once affiliated with? When I get my approval it depends on whether I'll have any more hoops to jump through, my transcript does transfer but if they accept it all, May? Youve heard of the Million Man March? Turn on the 6 o'clock news, witness the 1 fat redhead picketing[emoji188] outside the front door of the OSU-Wexner Medical Center . I will be p*****d and vocal![emoji14][emoji779]

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
