Struggling and Don't Want to Slip back into old Habits

Recommended Posts

Hey I am nine and a half months out from surgery. I have lost a lot of weight but I feel like I'm going to start not eating right again. Can anyone offer any suggestion on how do fight an "urge" to eat unhealthy. What can I do to stay on the correct path. I want to continue losing weight and I know what I have to do, but sometimes I do not eat the right things. Then I just feel really guilty.

We slip back into old habits because it's the easiest thing. It is very hard to retrain your brain to behave differently. Even after 9 months of doing well it is still easier to go backwards instead of forward. You've had major surgery and let someone cut out the most of your stomach.

This issue is between you and the problems that caused weight gain in the first place. Be stronger than those problems. Or fail. That's the choice.

I think one of the things you need to do is be organized. You have to have ready meals, and Snacks. You cannot say you will never have Desserts ever again. That is not realistic. But you can have ready low carb ,no sugar desserts . Lots of varieties out there. I even bought Protein chips for those times I really want to have a crunchy snack.I always have ready protein in the fridge. I am actually going to start freezing little meals I can grab and just pop in the microwave. But you have to be organized and proactive. You can do this. I know it's a fear we all have: gaining all our weight back. Let that fear push you to make the right choices .

All great advice above. All I'm going to add is be consistent. If you slip up get back on your plan.

What advice would you give your best friend if she asked the same question? Let go of the guilt and shame, trust yourself

You do not need to be perfect at this - plan an indulgence, journal what you ate and let it go. I don't know if you are upset over nonstop snacking from emotional eating, or just having a dessert sometimes. Keep your nutrition high and you will be less tempted to graze. Find a hobby that keeps your hands and mind busy.

Drag out your fat pants and try them on, then lay them on the bed and put your skinny ones on top and ask yourself if you want to ruin all that hard work. Snap a picture with your phone and use it as a reminder when you need a boost.

Hang in there, it's not over.

Do you have a goal in mind you can focus on when you feel tempted? Like a vacation you're going on and want to look great in pics? Or old clothes you want to fit in to? For me I want plastics, so I can have a body I'm happy with. So I focus on getting to my goal weigh ASAP, so I can get my tummy tuck!

Also, don't have the goal be perfection. You are guaranteed to feel like you failed if you allow yourself no slip ups or indulgences. Just make sure they are few and far between.

If I had the answer to this question I would make millions selling books and online classes.

What you describe sounds exactly what dieters say after their honeymoon phase is over and they have to start depriving themselves just to maintain a still undesirable weight and that is when "the old habits" start creeping in. The payoff gets smaller and the urge to eat grows.

Sorry, no real help here. My advice would be not to engage in dieting behavior anymore.

Thanks for all the encouragement and for responding. Just giving a quick update I did get back on track and was able to break my stall. I have to always remind myself this is not a diet this is a lifestyle change and I just have to work hard at it everyday. Thank you!!!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
