I hope people do the same if they decide to e. g. continue driving a car. Many people die in car accidents as well, even if they're good and responsible drivers and they have families that need to be taken care of, too.

Same for smoking. I hope every smoker has a big life insurance policy.

Nobody gives a flying f**k if a patient needs a second fundoplicatio because of heartburn or a second PTA because that stenosis needs a second dilatation but God forbid that someone needs a second WLS procedure.

My point is, it doesn't matter if you have 10 WLSs, if you don't change your eating habits you will have the same results. I believe too much emphasis is placed on the physical side of WLS, instead of the psychological side. Stories of "failed" WLS all have a common theme, namely, poor choices when it comes to nutrition. With very few exceptions, obesity is a product of addiction, not stomach capacity. And unfortunately surgery and the surgeons that perform them do not address the addiction.

My sleeve definitely helped me lose weight, but it doesn't keep me from gaining it all back. Choosing grilled chicken, a side of greens and Water over a double cheeseburger, fries and coke does that. Took thousand of hours of introspection, therapy, and mental health support to be able to make those choices.

People need to face the facts sometimes and its not always what they want to hear. But you cant tell people its their fault for the situations they put themselves in, we have to coddle each other and place blame elsewhere.. Granted, sometimes its a genetic defect or disease that cant be helped that would cause a person to be overweight, but an overwhelming majority of the time its them just not embracing a healthy lifestyle and making poor choices.

If calling that out on someone is being an A$$ - hole, then Im the biggest one, and I called myself out on my own actions, cause I got myself fat, no one else....

I would like to add I eat carbs every day. I consume fruits, rice, potatoes and oatmeal. I carb cycle frequently and has not stopped my body from changing. Any diet that eliminates food groups, in my opinion, is not realistic. I will add, my carbs are all consumed prior to 2 PM and it’s between 90g - 180g per day. I’ve attached before and after pics and I’m 8 years out with no intention of returning to before. It’s all in moderation. The person that began this thread obviously is an adult and WANTED a consensus from the court of public opinion. That individual can chose to accept or ignore the opinions that they choose. That being said the tone of the topic including the honesty about eating habits deserves honest answers, feels like a public cry for help, when it should be one made to that individual's medical team

Thank you for your comment JENN1 , I realize I was being a little glib in my post. My surgeon sold it to me as a "miracle" and I was told I would have "rapid weight loss" this was of course unrealistic. The Dietitian brought me back down to earth. I was dealing with disappointment of the missing magic! lol

I had a follow up with my surgeon 2 weeks ago- I walked into his office and he held his arms open and said "well" " didn't I tell you it would be great" I just sat down and couldn't entertain his enthusiasm.

Its silly really as I am a very grounded & practical person, but I have a long sad tale I wont go into now about a previous Gastric Band and a near death experience - so this was to be my salvation.

I think I was suffering with a bit of post surgical depression (and delusion) and let things get on top of me. But now i feel I am taking control.

I know the simple truth is that I need to be ever contious of my diet and exercise.

I am now starting to really like going to the gym and aim for 4 times a week, getting used to the cardio and increasing each week.

I am losing around 1kilo a week and eating lots of vegetables, eggs and calorie controlled ready meals.

I feel good and with a bit of support I can do this.

Becoming obese is not as simple as having a lack of willpower and being a glutton. I know plenty of obese people with rock hard wills and incredible self control when it comes to other aspects of their lives- just not food.

You are over simplifying an issue that is biological and psychological and extremely complex. Insinuating that over weight people are just irresponsible, don’t care about their health and weak is offensive and wrong.

This isn’t about being PC. I’m the last person to care about being pc. It’s not about not hurting someone feelings or babying someone. It’s about bringing awareness to the FACT that obesity is creating by numerous underlying issues in our society and eating patterns and cultural mindset that go far being one individuals liking of cheesecake.

We are dealing with a population of people with extremely disordered eating behavior brought upon them by a lifetime of misguided messages about how to eat, what to eat, how much to eat, and most importantly- what to look like.

What we are not dealing with is hundreds of thousand of people who just can’t resist the delicious crunch of their double decker. Because I promise you, if being thin came down to willpower alone, I wouldn’t have had to remove 90% of my stomach organ to get there.

Basically proving my point about not accepting responsibility for their actions. I did say there is a portion of people who simply have medical or hormone issues, however the overwhelming majority of the country that is obese are simply misguided, uneducated as to how to properly eat and exercise and are making poor choices at the dinner table.

There is a contingent of very nasty people on here, just steer clear and put them on mute if possible.

I am so proud of you for going back to your doctor and discussing this with him!! I am sure it's hard, life happens and what we do with it, how we handle it, is where our success lies. Getting back onto the protocol is the best thing for you, focus on 64oz Water, 90g Protein (Or whatever your protocol states), getting in your Vitamins and then getting back to your 10K steps per day. Follow that and it WILL Happen for you again! You are amazing for going to your doctor and being proactive about this. It's OK to fall as long as you pick yourself back up and get moving again. Good luck love and have a WONDERFUL holiday knowing you are getting back on track!

If we don't face the emotional side of obesity and change the way we eat we will just put the weight back in. No amount of phenteramine will make you successful unless you plan on taking it forever and facing the mindset that got us here. I think it just takes some longer to get there than others or they may not get there at all. I know I've been emotionally eating for a couple of weeks and didn't realize it until a friend mentioned that she hoped I could get my comfort in another way than food. Then the light went on and I realized what I was doing. Thank God I didn't gain any weight back and now I'm trying to plan better Snacks and build time to walk into my day to help with the stress.
I saw my surgeon yesterday for my 6 month follow up- I asked about stretching the sleeve- the response was that you'd have to eat large meals consistently to stretch it significantly.
Bottom line - you have to know yourself and figure out what works for you. Why you sabotage yourself and what will work to end that sabotage. It's not going to be a quick fix.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
