Are you pre-op or post-op? What has your surgeon and/or dietitian said?

I stopped coffee the night before surgery and started drinking it again approximately 2 months post-op. I drink a minimum of 3 cups a day without any problems.

When I was told no coffee, that meant no caffeine. So I had Decaf pre and post. I ordered decaf iced coffee from Starbucks a few times pre-op as well. I started my caffeinated coffee about three weeks post.

My doctor said I could have black Decaf as soon as a couple days after surgery. Just to play it by ear and see what my sleeve is comfortable with. I had a mug earlier today and it was lovely. I just had to drink it very slowly! I put a little of Jordan's Skinny pumpkin Caramel Syrup in there and it was like heaven. :)

I was told I can have coffee even few days after surgery. Is there any reason why we can't have it?

I think that is one of those surgeon specific things, I read articles that it doesn't cause any issues. I think it's just up to how your individual doctor recommended and your own body reacts to it.

I don't see anything wrong with it! I sometimes do a skinny mocha or skinny iced cinnamon dolce. I just wouldn't make it a regular thing, even the fake sugar is not great for you.

I was told by my doctor for healing purposes stay away from caffeine for 3 months. I do the occasional skinny now.

My surgeon told me on my first day post op to go ahead and try it and see if the caffeine irritated me. It didn't. I have no history of heartburn. So I've had it every day since my surgery (6 weeks ago.) I usually have it as a 2 shot latte with Fairlife milk and a 1/2 tsp of sugar leaf.

I also have an occasional short latte, unsweetened from Starbucks.

I only have one cup a day though. I just bought the SF coffeemate pumpkin spice Creamer & did just have my first actual cup of coffee (instead of espresso shots) yesterday with the pumpkin spice creamer. (I debated between the SF and the regular. I'm not a huge fake sugar fan unless it's stevia. So, this will probably be my first and last jar) But....It. Was. Heaven.

I gave it up pre-op and haven't started back up. Haven't had the desire or felt the need. Bear in mind that I used to be a 30 ounce in the morning Diet Mountain Dew or coffee guy...

I don't drink coffee, I never have, but I do drink black tea and I've been drinking caffeinated since about 4 months post op with no issue.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
