Any nurses who got sleeved?

Recommended Posts

I'm a nurse who works 12hr shifts, on my feet for most of my shift. I'm getting sleeved on apr 13 in mexico which is next week. I only managed to get a week off after and I'm back at work on the 23rd. To all my fellow nurses and other professionals who are walking for a long duration of your shift, Is this possible?

Also to note, I have not told ANYONE about the surgery. No one at work/hr, no friends, and not to my parents or to my boyfriend. The only one who knows is my brother (who I know will not blab) and I only told him just in case I die out there or something lol

I'm a nurse in a crazy ER. I was just sleeved on 3/31 and I'm scheduled to go back on 4/9 so we're kind of in the same situation. I'm hoping I'll feel energized enough since I'm finally getting some Protein in I'm sure there are lots of people on here with more insight but I can definitely follow up once I return this weekend!

I'm a nurse too. I took 3 weeks off, but it will be 3 1/2 the way my rotation worked out. I go back on Monday and will let you know how things go. I do 8 hr shifts, but literally stand the entire day. Surgical-wise, I think I'll be ok. My incisions have healed well. I'm a little worried about my energy levels as I'm still not eating many calories. But, my main concern is fluids. I can't drink when I'm in the procedure room.

I am also a nurse who is planning to have the sleeve next month. I don't have my surgery date yet, I will finish my pre-op appointments on the 20th of this month. I have told my nurse manager who is really cool and have planned to take two weeks off. I am looking forward to seeing how other nurses are doing once they go back to work.

I'm an RN in a very busy L&D unit. I was sleeved a year ago. Just had my surgiversary on Tuesday! I took 4 weeks off and glad I did. The issue for me wasn't pain or mobility. It was being able to get 60oz of Water and 60g of Protein in. For the first month we can eat/drink so little at a time it requires frequent food/hydration breaks. I knew I wouldn't be able to do that on my busy unit. So I took the month. That's what worked for me. But I've seen other people with desk jobs take off only a week. Whatever works for you. Just be sure to get your protein and water in!!

I am a nurse and I will be out 4 weeks. Mainly because of the lifting guidelines at my hospital. My surgeon said it may even be longer because of the amount of weight the hospital requires us to lift. I think it's more employee health that won't clear me u too surgeon says it's ok to lift the heavier weight.

So glad I found this! I'm a nursing student and I'm terrified I won't get enough Water in (more so with clinicals). If I have to hide a water bottle in my bra I will lol. I really don't know what to expect. I do know I would just die if I pass out in the hospital or something. But I have the summer to heal so I'm hoping for the best. Getting sleeved next month! :)

Best to be cautious (if you can) with lifting. 4 weeks is probably wise.

Good luck!

I'm a nursing assistant. I took 6 weeks off. I had the sleeve on December 2nd. Although I took that time off, the first few days were rough. About the third or fourth day it got better. I work on an Antepartum unit.

By the way you will be cold after surgery.

I'm an ER RN in a very busy ER, I took 9 days off... I did ok I just had to remember to drink all day. I also told my supervisor I had hurt my back and was put in a lower accuity area to diminish lifting.

ER nurse in a busy department. Sleeved 3/29 back 4/18. Doc wants me wearing an abdominal binder as a reminder not to lift. 12 hour shifts.

Everyone knows I had the procedure as I've been very open with my coworkers.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
