Hello!

I am new to this forum and have recently considered going to Mexico for the gastric sleeve surgery. My current BMI is in between 36-37. I have no other issues other than a high BMI. I scheduled an appointment here in the states, but the doctor wouldn't even see me because I did "not qualify". I have struggled with weight my entire life, but it seems to be getting harder the older I get. I would like to control it before it gets out of control.

My main concern is traveling to another country to get this procedure done. It scares me to think of it even in the states. But I know if I continue to gain weight, my body will slowly break down. I already have knee issues and slight arthritis in my hip. I am about 5'7, 232 pounds. Through brief research, I've come to the conclusion that Dr. Illan may be the way to go. Can anyone give me their experience traveling, fear, etc. I would love to hear others journey's! Thanks!!!

Well I'm not okay with getting GERD, it is a risk. Many people to do get it, there is a medicine for it. But yes it out ways the risk for me.

i just meant for OP to consider the MGB mini gastric bypass instead of sleeve. Very little reflux, very simple 40 minute operation, can be revised or reversed and you keep your stomach. Lots of ppl are getting revised from sleeve to MGB.

I understand that surgeons are hesitant to follow patients they didn't do surgery for. But any primary care provider, including nurse practitioners, can follow you for any labwork you need. I'm a nurse midwife and follow labs on many female patients that need frequent lab work (midwives are mid-level providers for women that do much more than deliver babies). There is no need to seek out a bariatric center. What about patients in areas of the US that are nowhere near a bariatric center?
