January Sleevers Check-In

Recommended Posts

You'll get there... I am just looking forward to the day when I can eat more then just 4 bites of a meal. Still not able to do more then that and at times frustrates me.. But from speaking with others they all say it will get better .

I've been told the first year is the worst... so over it..

One thing I've been meaning to ask everyone - how long does it typically take for you to eat a meal? For myself it is largely dependent on what exactly I'm eating. If it's cottage cheese or yogurt I usually only spend around 10-15 minutes or so eating that, but something like chicken salad I've found if I eat a portion and don't give myself 15 minutes or more it feels like things are backing up and sits heavy.

The only post-op "fight" I've had with my wife so far is over the length of time it was taking me to eat. It's difficult to sit at the dinner table because she'll be done with her entire plateful of food and here I am still working on my 1/2 cup of whatever. Anymore I will eat up until the point where she's done and leave the table and then finish later. Otherwise we'll just eat in the living room and put something on TV so I can take my sweet time with a meal.

Hey All,

It took a while to find the January folks! I'll be 11weeks out tomorrow and still not able to eat much on the solid food front and my new tummy, Gurgling Gertie, Gi-Gi for short is talking to me frequently. I'm taking my Vitamins and supplements as prescribe and getting 70+ gms Protein Shake and whatever food I can get down. Walking and doing a little strength work too. It's good to be getting my energy back and it's better than before my surgery! I hope to be supportive of all who come to this forum and to except support from others. WELCOME TO THE LOSER'S BENCH!!!! :D:1311_thumbsup_tone2:

I am down 44 since surgery, 88 since July when I made changes. I can pretty much eat anything. Have never gotten sick, I do get "gurgly" . I am worried I push it.....I want way more food than I can handle, and am doing sometime a cup a meal....worried I am stretching my stomach. The constant battle....eyes bigger than stomach...literally.

I do feel better though, way more energy, am working out and doing lots of walking. And feel good doing it. I just need to not get cocky....know what I mean?

That is so great.. congra's . I know the feeling!.. this surgery does not get rid of the cravings or desires to eat the foods we love. That's when our eyes get bigger then our new small tummy. I hate the gurly... and will also get hi-cups if I push it. Do you have problems drinking water.... I use to love Water drank three to four bottles a day. Now can't stand it.. HATE THAT!...

So far for me down 56 pounds but have not moved in two weeks... STALLED...going to start the gym this week. Didn't start sooner because my energy was so low. But will start slowing because have days where I still feel drained. Question are you able to eat salad.. I can't tolerate salads yet. HATE IT...

Hi Joannrmn,

I went through a period about 3 weeks after surgery that Water made me gag! I was not a big drinker before, would always forget....and I will admit, I am sure I don't do 64 oz every day. Now I am able to drink water, but I mix it up a lot. I drink crystal light, and too much, I am not an artificail sweetner fan.

Salads yes, I can, but again not nearly as much as I want...and I have gotten my most "full" from salads.

Congrats on your success too! Where in NY are you?

I started adding True Lemon to my Water just to change things up a bit. No artificial sweeteners was a big deal to me, they just don't taste right.

There is True Orange and Lime as well. 100 packets for about $20USD on Amazon.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
