What were you scared of?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am one week out to my surgery date and I have one fear that I know is ridiculous but it still is in my head.

Fear of it not working and me going through this for nothing. What were your fears before surgery?

I am scheduled March 31. Ok, my BIGGEST fear is something going terribly wrong and everyone thinking, all this because she was so weak she could t loose weight on her own!

I'm getting surgery in Tijuana in 10 days. I know it's not shady as I've done tons of research and a friend did the exact procedure with the same provider. My fear though is something going wrong while I'm far from home, and not having it covered later on by my US insurance. However after discussing with my primary Dr he said most surgeons don't want to "fix" another's because of how much work is involved, no matter where they are located. Kind of "damned if you do damned if you don't" so I'm taking my chances!

Positive thoughts, positive results. I know it sounds simple but I'm still in the beginning & my fear is the whole approval (well was) I'm still awaiting the sleep apnea test & I keep hearing people talk about this denial part so much that I almost wanted to back down. But I know I need this so I'm just focusing on that one word "approved"....just channel your fears into positive energy and you'll be fine. I know you're going to great on your new journey ?? Best wishes ??

I am a fiercely positive person, and always try to be that way. And, you would think that, as someone who has had multiple major surges before would be prepared. But the closer we get to my date (2/22), I become more and more scared of a major complication, or not waking up after surgery. I'm also a perfectionist by nature and my weight is the thing that I have failed at, and I'm terrified of doing it again. Working so hard to keep myself as healthy as possible so these aren't things I need to worry too much more about.

As I read all of your responses, I smile and nod. We all have so many of the same thoughts and fears. I am trying to find humor in it as a way to get through it. That and positive thoughts!!

I am also positive. And I know, logically, this surgery is very safe, but I also know that anytime you get put under that there can be complications. I've looked at both sides and decided that small risk is worth it. I've had so many friends that have had this done and don't regret it a bit. They are so much healthier!

I too am headed to Tijuana. I can't imagine going through all the hoops I'm reading about here in the states and my insurance absolutely won't pay for it anyway.

I'm a worrier at heart... I haven't even met with my surgeon yet. I have an appointment next week, but I'm still trying to figure out if the risks are worth it. Being overweight has its own risks too though!

I have 3 teenagers at home. I worry about how complications would affect them.

But, I bounce back to looking at the people around me (weight-related depression, job insecurity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, dementia, neuropathy, retinopathy, sepsis, pulmonary ebolism...) and I see my own future. I have just started blood pressure medication and am prediabetic.

And I realize that I need to do something NOW. If all goes well, I'll be a BETTER parent. If it doesn't, well, at least they saw me TRY to better myself.

And that's why I'm not telling a lot of people! My husband is the only family member that knows. Doesn't help that I'm the only overweight person in my family...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
