Who had sleeve surgery in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 days post-op from a band to sleeve revision in Mexico. We flew to San Diego, they picked us up at the airport and went straight to the hospital for blood work and EKG. Then they took us to a really nice hotel and had broth and Jello for me. The next morning we went back for surgery. I stayed 2 nights. My husband had to stay at the hotel though. After discharge they took me back to his hotel for 1 night...with broth and jello. The next morning they took us back over the border to the airport and we flew home. We got to San Diego on Wednesday June 7. Surgery on June 8 and we flew home on Sunday June 11. I have no complaints. I was exhausted traveling home but not in pain. I had asked fir wheelchair assistance between gates. The hospital had everything down perfectly and I had no issues at all. No pain, vomiting, nausea, etc. I used Dr Gutierrez with Mexico Bariatric Center.

I had my sleeve done with Dr Ramos-Kelly 3 weeks ago. It was a great experience. I had very little post op discomfort and no gas related pain. I was back to work on day seven. 3 weeks out I can't believe I even had surgery as I feel absolutely fantastic. I mostly attribute this to his appreciable skill from well over 10,000 bariatric surgeries. I elected to have it done at Clinica San Juan mostly because I considered myself a low risk surgical patient. The Clinica is small and relatively speaking low frills. He also works out of Angeles Hospital which is state of the art and quite posh but it is about 3 grand more, Excellent choice if you have health related comorbidities or very high BMI.

I am also going to Mexico. I read a lot of great stuff about Mexico Bariatric Center and Dr. Valenzuela had great reviews. I'm nervous but since I can't afford the surgery in the U.S. this is a good alternative.

Yes you can :) u would just need to tell them that you want too, they Will make the arrangements for you and ensure that you get their medical rate, and of course we you would pay the extra ..

I am four days post-op. I chose Dr. Fernando Garcia with Tijuana Bariatrics as well. The experience was excellent. Bedside manner, the facility itself, the staff, coordination of travel, communication from the very beginning, and the surgery itself were EXCELLENT. They even arrange a day trip for you after surgery and take you around Tijuana so you can get some walking in and popsicles. The hotel is on point as far as knowing who you are and your dietary restrictions. The entire experience made me feel like a VIP. If I had to do it again, I would. Like everyone says, do your research and find who works best for you.

I am going to have surgery in Mexico on Dec 19th.

I was planning to watch Netflix and Hulu while I recover, but I just found out my US versions won't work in Mexico. So I'm pretty bummed and worried what is going to occupy my time for 5 days in a foreign country by myself.

You can always download Netflix shows ahead of time so you can watch when you’re there! Also, you can get an app like BetterNet which allows you to use a U.S. IP address. That’s what I did!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
