Self pay: unexpected bills

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I had the sleeve gastrectomy a little over a month ago. The surgeon's office quoted me a price - which I was led to believe included everything.

Last week, I received 2 bills in the mail (labs and anesthesiology) which come to an additional $3500! This was not expected at all and not in my budget.

I'm about to review my paperwork to see WTH is going on.

Anyone run into similar issues?

Yes, my lab work and Anesthesiologist were seperate from the surgery bill itself.

I got a bill for both too. I called and the anesthesia was a mistake bill so call them first as it probably(and should have been) covered. The labs however were not covered and I don't agree with that.

Actually I got 2 lab bills. One was for the lab specimen of the stomach and the other was from the person reading the lab results. Ridiculous isn't it?

Dang! I just wish I would've been expecting them, but I had no idea.

Good idea - I'm definitely going to have an in-person chat with them before I send the check. Three grand for less than an hour with a nurse anesthetist (not even a MD) seems a bit steep!

Woops! I didn't realize until after posting that I should've posted in the "self-pay" part of the forums

They should definitely have explained exactly what wasn't covered in the price they quoted you. I've never been self pay but all the paperwork I've ever seen (I have a medical background) indicate that the anesthesiologist and labs would be separate bills. If they led you to believe it would all be included I would fight it with my surgeon's office.

When I had my EGD done I got 2 separate bills from the anesthesiologist AND a nurse anesthetist since they were both present during that test.

Now isn't that wrong?!

Two separate bills from 2 separate people in addition to the normal bills from the Dr, the hospital, the lab, and the person reading the lab!

This was all just for the EGD that I was out for a total of probably 5 minutes for.

I see why people go to Mexico for their surgery now. So much cheaper

That sucks. So much for transparency in Healthcare.

I was self pay as well. Anesthesiologist and pathologist unfortunately have to be paid. First thing you should do is call their office, let them know that you are in fact self pay and that this cost was unexpected. What would they quote a self-pay patient? It is highly likely that they will give you a serious discount (possibly 25-50%). What you negotiated with your surgeon was HIS FEE and the hospital facility fee (which does NOT pay the doctors). Good luck.

Yes, I just received a bill and about died.... $13,000. Yes. You read that right.

I payed $2000 OOP (PLUS all of my $35 co-pays every month, and pre-op lab fees) and was told that my insurance had been checked over by the dr's office, and that's all I had to pay, and insurance would cover the rest. No problem. They checked this at my first appointment, and then a week before surgery for approval.

The reason for the $13,000?? That was what insurance didn't cover. My doctor billed BCBS for $38,000 for my surgery. Seriously?????? If I would have known this, I probably wouldn't have had this done. I had a hard time just coming up with the $2000 deductible. So, now I'm stuck with a bill I can't pay. You think they would take a payment of $20 a month?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
