Weight loss requirements pre op?

Recommended Posts

At my last check in, which was 3 out of 6, I was told that I should lose about 5 pounds between each of the remaining appointments. So about 15 pounds total. She said if I do not do this then the surgeon will ask that I lose weight before I will be scheduled for surgery. And I'm not talking about the liquid diet that shrinks your liver type weight loss. She means, just lose weight. Im 250 now (6 pounds lost since I began) so it's not like operating on me will be dangerous due to my weight and after all, Im doing this because I can't lose the weight on my own! I'm a little freaked out about it and I guess I should add that I have feminine issues that make it difficult for me to lose weight. Did any of you have pre op weight loss requirements other than then liquid pre op diet?

My surgeon had no weight loss requirement (but I did lose 99 pounds during my pre-op six-month insurance-required diet), but the surgeon who did my mom's sleeve and my dad's bypass required them to lose 10% of their body weight before he would operate.

It sounds like they are asking you to lose 15 pounds in addition to the 6 you've lost which is a little under 10% of your original weight. They are probably asking you to do that to make sure you are serious about making the life changes necessary to make surgery successful. That was the goal of my parents' surgeon. (And if you read a few posts on here, that's a good thing. Every day there are multiple posts by people who very obviously were/are not prepared to make real life changes at all...)

Unfortunately self pay is not an option for me and my insurance does have Bariatric coverage.

I had no weight loss requirements. I am self pay though.

In fact when I saw the Dr and he gave me the 2 shakes and a meal pre op, he said he didn't expect I will lose weight in the 1 week pre op . I've been on it for 5 days and have not lost a pound!

How do I go from 2 shakes and 1 meal of chicken and greens and not lose a pound?

I think every Dr is different with requirements

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
