Did anyone cheat on preop

Recommended Posts

Hello again sorry been mia I did have my surgery first couple days were a little though but as of today I'm starting to feel a lot more like myself or even better and getting rid of some of this gas packed in my tummy. I'm going to try to stick to updating my process on here to maybe help someone else. I'm so exited to be starting this journey and knowing I do have some supportive ppl. still debating starting a YouTube channel for everyone to actually see results so if I do and anyone is interested In peeking in I will be posting info over the weekend. All you are doing great even if you slipped up just pull it back together and get back on track it is worth it

No, I didn't cheat. The reason I didn't is because I'm a nurse and I've seen a lot of patients who had surgery and then later regained because they never worked on fixing their brain when their surgery happened. I'm six weeks post Monday and I still haven't cheated and now that it has been 2 months, I feel like I've got a decent handle on the beginning of changing my relationship with food. Mindful eating helped me a lot during my preop diet and dealing with head hunger.

I cheated on the pre-op twice. BUT my nutritionist approved. My sister who had waited to get married for 35 years had her wedding the week before surgery. I am her best friend and was her maid of honor. We ate, drank and celebrated the night before and then at the wedding. I had worked hard the six months before the surgery and every day except those two since. I quit smoking for the 2 months before surgery. I am proud of the changes I have made and continue to make. Do what's safe and sensible. Most of all make sure YOU are ready, which if you are even asking these questions means you are now at least thinking about your decisions first and that is a HUGE step in the right direction.

Because the point of the pre-op liquid diet is to shrink the size of your liver so as to reduce the risk of injury to your liver or having to go to an open surgery, I feel it's super important to follow the preop instructions to a T. We might want to cheat but you have to understand that now and after the surgery cheating is a danger to your health.

No judgements from an and only support. The last thing anyone wants is for the surgery to go poorly or for the doctor to say they can't do the surgery because you didn't lose enough. It's happened to many sadly.

I haven't cheated on my Pre-op, which I've been on now for a week. But I'm one of the lucky ones whose NUT recommends a diet of actual food instead of all-liquid. I've been having 2-3 shakes a day w/ a little baked chicken breast, light string cheese, hummus and SF Jello and pudding as Snacks. My NUT has all sorts of food to choose from but I've narrowed down what's easiest, most nutritious (Protein packed) and easy to take to work...

I am also self-pay and do not want to have any reason for the surgery to be cancelled or difficult. I'm very excited and ready for it to take place and it doesn't occur to me to cheat at all. I am also using this time to get accustomed to eating less, not obsessing about food and breaking habits like nighttime snacking and eating 'chocolate rewards'.

I find it interesting how others approach this surgery. We are all different and have different perspectives on how to approach our goals. I hope everyone is successful regardless of how they get there. I'm making this my last stand and making the right changes so I don't have to go back to being fat ever again.

To be honest I never really strictly adhered to my Pre-Op. Had 2 proper meals the day after thanksgiving, and 3 days before surgery (Dec 5). I already modified my eating habits so I had lost close to 40lbs in the 3 months leading to my surgery. I also new my liver was within normal bounds (perks of having a radiologist as a friend) so I wasn't too bothered.
I wouldn't recommend cheating though.. I was already on a self administered '2 Meal Replacement diet' for several weeks.

I was on a 3 week liquid diet pre-op. I think this is an unreasonable demand to put on someone who has had weight problems their whole life. I wish my surgeon's office treated me like an adult and worked with me on plan where I could eat a small, reasonable amount of real food. But this surgeon's practice is a bariatric assembly line and are more concerned with easily communicated rules than they are in working with patients individually.

I ate a hard boiled egg most days in addition to the shakes. I flipped out 5 days before surgery and ate a pizza. That was bad. I panicked. I was down 24 pounds at that point and stayed at that weight until the surgery.

My doctor said there were no complications with the surgery. I can't yet say it all worked out because I'm only 10 days post-op but it's going very well so far. I've stuck to my prescribed post-op diet.

This is an interesting perspective for sure.

Is it also unreasonable to expect a smoker to stop smoking pre-op? Is it unreasonable to expect a drunk driver to quit cold turkey or face jail time? How about a drug addict? Should they be given a "drug allowance" in rehab?

My surgeon not only treated me like an adult, but he expected me to ACT like an adult. I followed my pre op diet for a month and I didn't stray. This didn't make me "more" or "superior" to anyone who chooses a different path. It simply helped me prove to myself that I was ready for such a drastic surgery and that I was committed to my own success.

Yes, it would be completely unreasonable to tell a drug addict to "stop it" and then send them home with some instructions and a pamphlet for a support group. And they do use prescribed drugs to help addicts wean off of the dangerous, illegal ones.

Yes, it's not reasonable to expect a good outcome if you do nothing more than tell a drunk driver to stop. That's why the penalities for drunk driving always include some form of education and monitoring.

Yes, it is unreasonable to tell a tobacco addict to stop without giving them the tools to help them.

You sound like someone who would argue against bariatric surgery because I should be able to "ACT like an adult" and just eat less. Do you like it when people tell you that?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
