1 week weigh in post op

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone

How much did you roughly lose in the first of the their surgery?

I'm 1 week post op today and scared to weigh myself incase I haven't lost due to Fluid as I have heard some people saying. Is week 2 or three the best weeks to weigh yourself?

Don't weigh yourself. You'll drive yourself crazy with the scale in the first several weeks. Because of the IV fluids and trauma of surgery, your body trying to heal, etc. your weight on the scale will do very odd things and it can be psychologically hard to see the numbers on the scale when they don't reflect the reality of your food intake and so on. Just stay off it for the first four weeks after surgery is my advice.

And I could not tell you how much I lost in the first week because "stay off the scale for four weeks post-op" was what my team told me to do. I had faith that I was following my plan correctly and the weight would come off, fast or slow.

Good luck!

If you're scared to weigh & are questioning when the right time is than I would follow Bufflehead's advice and don't weigh just yet.

I wasn't scared. I was excited and impatient and I couldn't wait to weigh myself. I lost about 3 kgs the first week (I think that's like 7 pounds). I also know someone who gained 5 pounds. Just be prepared for the fact that you might not like what you see. (But maybe you will). Good luck in any case.

I came on today to ask the very same question. I am two weeks post op Tuesday. I'm 5'6 - SW was 230 and today I am 225. I haven't moved in days and was fully expecting to lose 10-15 lbs in the first 10 days like my surgeons packet estimated. I am drinking 64 ounces of Water and taking in at least 60 grams of Protein also eating between 500-650 calories. So I know I'm doing the right thing. I'm just curious when I will see the dramatic weight loss start to happen but I am patient.

Your surgeon should not even have a expected loss for this first few weeks. You probably gained right after surgery. I came home 9lbs heavier. A 5lb loss is excellent.

I gained 10lbs in the hospital. I lost all of it plus 8 more the first week. But a lot of people dont. Its really depends on how your body reacts to being violated. :D

Are you sure you are getting enough calories? My hospital provides access to a bariatric nurse for the first 2 years after surgery. Mine checked in on me on tuesday and i told her i was getting in between 600 and 700 cals and 60g Protein. She said that less than 800 is considered starvation, so she wanted me to hit 800-900. She also said 70g protein min and when i started working out to do 80-100g protein.

I am taller than you and 100lbs more, so this may be tailored to my numbers but you should ask your dr or nut.

After speaking with my bariatric nurse, i jumped my cals from 600-700 to 800-950 and my Protein from 60's to 70's. Since then i have been losing 1+ lbs a day rather than the 0.4 -0.6 previously.

Thank you for saying this. I have been shocked at how many times I have read people restricting calories to the point of starvation. All research will tell you that will not lead to long term weight loss. As well as our bodies are healing from a major surgery. People might get the numbers they want in the beginning by living off 500 a day but it will long term bottom out their metabolism and lead to gain down the road. I am def going slow and steady and focusing on health right now.

I feel less restricted at that cal range. I get a Breakfast lunch dinner and snack which helps keep the fatman (head hunger) at bay.

Plus, eating more AND losing more weight = WIN/WIN!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
