Gum during liquid diet is a no no?

I feel like I've read people posting that gum can't be chewed during liquid diet. I wasn't told that by my surgeon. Why would you not be allowed to chew gum?

Sugar free is probably okay, but after surgery they want you to stay away from it because it ends up putting a bunch of air in your stomach.
