Hi!

I am now going through the process of getting approval for vsg. I wanted to know what are the odds of getting diagnosed with sleep apnea? I really need that to qualify!! My husband says I snore alot, I am really tured ALL the time, I am sleepy even when I go to bed extremely early, I nap while riding in the car... I have high cholesterol and was treated for GERD and sinus infections.

What are your thoughts? I go to see my Surgeon next Wednesday.

You usually have to be referred to the sleep doctor by your primary. The dr will meet with you to go over your symptoms. If you present with enough they will do the sleep study. During a sleep study you're covered in all kinds of wires and sensors. They rack your movements, your breathing, how many times you stop breathing your oxygen levels etc.

When I had my sleep study I was stopping breathing 53x an hour. My O2 levels got down to 67%.

Once they have all of your information they will decide whether or not you classify as having sleep apnea and whether you have obstructive sleep apnea, Central sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea which is a combination of obstructive and Central. Then they will bring you back for a second sleep study that will measure you again this time on a CPAP machine or a BiPAP machine. You repeat the second step until they find a machine and settings that greatly reduce your sleep apnea.

For me that equals a BiPAP machine and an oxygen concentrator.

Thanks for the information. One of the requirements for my insurance is to do a sleep study. Should I go to my primary care doctor 1st or just have the surgeon do it?

If the surgeon can do the referral then go for it. I started the sleep apnea process before the weight loss surgery process so my primary care referred me. If you have sleep apnea the machine will make you feel so much better. I don't wake with headaches anymore , or fall asleep the minute the lights turn off while watching TV. I don't snore at all anymore but the machine does have white noise. Most importantly I'm not tired during the day and I don't wake up gasping like somebody punched me in the chest.

Thanks so much!! I'll check in with my primary care doctor.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
