Weight loss is slowing only 10 days post op

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's just me; at first I was losing a ton of weight and this seemed to be the norm especially in the beginning from what I read. I was able to lose 20 pounds exactly during my pre-op diet. And now that I'm ten days out; I've only lost about 3 pounds a week since surgery.

I'm following the post op diet. And on average I'm only getting about 350 calories in a day. (That's all I can seem to get in) I take my post op Vitamins. I'm eating low carb, extremely low sugar... Getting all my fluids...don't get it. Am I doing something wrong?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is; is the amount of weight I'm losing normal? Am I supposed to be losing more? I guess I was under that impression since I read a lot of people lose weight quickly.

it is normal for the weight to go slow - and will probably be slow until you can get more calories/protein in. you need to convince your body that you are not starving it.

right now (the first month especially) your body is in full recovery mode from major surgery. weight loss is secondary to healing.

The only thing that you might be doing "wrong" is eating too little. How are you doing at reaching your Protein target? What is your Protein target? Your primary focus right now should be following your post-op program and getting at least 64 oz of Fluid and all of your protein, every day.

That said, none of us lose at a constant or steady rate. Stalls and weight fluctuations are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process of losing weight. We all experience stalls and slowdowns in weight loss and just about everyone experiences a stall about three weeks after surgery.

Embrace the Stall

You are right on schedule. We usually experience a very rapid loss whenever we start a major weight loss effort (surgical or otherwise,) as our bodies will first burn off our short term energy supplies of glycogen (basically stored carbs.) After that is exhausted, the body usually rests while it gets the idea that you are serious about this caloric deficit thing and gets into its longer term fat burning mode. This is what creates the typical three (or third) week stall that we hear so much about - the loss pauses as the body works to restore some of its lost glycogen reserves and moves to burning more fat. The other consequence of this shift is that fat burns a lot more slowly than glycogen (around 3500 calories pre pound lost vs. around 2000 calories per pound) so it takes more lost calories to lose a pound now than it did at first. The good part about this is that you are now doing what you really want to do - burn off that excess fat!

Note that you may or may not experience an actual stall here - no weight loss for several days or weeks - though most do, but you will certainly experience a slow down in your loss rate. I never had any measurable stall here, but there was a distinct change in the loss rate chart. Also note that this shift to "fat burning" mode has nothing to do with what style of diet one may be on (some promoters of fad diets like Atkins or Keto talk their diet putting one in "fat burning" mode as a means of keeping one buying their products despite some unpleasant side effects,) as it is the continued caloric deficit that keeps you burning that excess fat. The same pattern happened when people were caught up in the low fat fad.

It is also good to keep in mind that long term, our loss rate will generally decline as we get lighter - it simply takes fewer calories to move ourselves around 24/7 than it did when we were heavier, so unless one seriously ramps up their exercise/activity levels, the loss rate will slowly taper off over time.

@@Miss.Bunny447 I had my surgery on 7/22. I lost 10 pounds immediately (in first ten days) then Stalled for about 2.5 weeks. I was beyond frustrated, spoke with my NUT and my counselor who just said it was normal and to just try to reach my calorie goals(800/day) and Protein and liquid goals. So I just did what I could each day and three days ago, I started seeing movement On the scale again. Now that stall is over- I'm working on only weighing once a week on a set day/time. Easier said than done- but I know where you are and how it feels to be disappointed after this major step. Good luck- keep at it!

I'm 15 days post-op. I stalled at exactly 10 days and haven't lost anything since then. I'm assuming the 3 week stall came a little early for us. The scale will eventually move again :-)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
