A place for bandsters in their 60's

Recommended Posts

I read a post that someone in their 60's wrote and

said there was nowhere to go where people are in

their age group. I thought maybe they would like to

have a thread where the 60 yr old (and/or older)

people could come and talk with people around the

same age.

I am replying to this to bump it up in case someone in their 60's is looking

for something like this. I hope this thread takes off. Older people have

different issues than the people in their 30's etc.

I have been searching this site to see how successful

people have been with lap band if they are over the

age of 60. As we get older, our metabolism slows

down. I wish more 60 and above had posted in here

so I could see how much weight they have lost.

Thank goodness! To finally find people in their 60s who have had lap band. I know people have it done at our age because Medicare will pay for the procedure, but I'm always the oldest one in the room. I was banded on June 20 and am still getting adjustments. How long did it take any of you to get the adjustment just right?

I turned 60 a couple of months after being banded in Feb of this year. It will be nice to have some others in this decade to share experiences with. In 6 months I have lost 40 pounds. Not bad, but a bit slower than I'd like. I am also doing Curves 3-4 days a week and swimming when I get invited to the neighbor's pool. Want to lose another 55 pounds so it will be a while before I get there. Other than a few "golf balls" I haven't had any of the other problems I've read about. I'd do this again in a heartbeat.

Hello, I am 61 and will get my band on September 5. It seems like an eternity since I first decided to do this. Last February, to be exact.

I am 100 pounds overweight and looking so forward to getting it off. I hope this time next year, I will be close to my goal.

I am 63 and had my band since 23 Jul. I have a VG band and trying to stick to my diet. (it's hard) First fill is 7 Sep. I hope I will have some restriction. I have lost very little, but that's OK.

Hi, I will be 60 in less than 2 months so would like to join this group also! I had my band on July 20, 2007. There was an older thread for over 60 but I guess it died months ago!

Hi

I am almost 65 and I was banded Aug.1, 2007. I wanted to lose 132 lbs. when I investigated lap band surgery. I hope that is not wishful thinking. I have lost 23 lbs since the preop diet which started July 22. I am afraid to go on the scale again and find that I have gained it back. I am now on "mushies" and the doctor said most people don't lose during those 3 weeks and maybe even gain some because there is no restriction yet. The important thing is to heal and more losing will start after my first fill on Sept. 18. I am okay with losing slower than the young ones, and I am delighted to find a site for my age group. I have gained and lost many pounds during my adult life; the harsh part is gaining it back plus a few more. Hopefully the band will put an end to that. Unfortunately I have not been able to exercise much. I have knee problems and may need surgery soon. I'd love to keep in touch with others in this thread.

Trish

Hey guys; I have been visiting the site for those over 50 and banded. I will get my band on the 27th of August. I will be 59 in October. So, there are a few of us out there. The thing is, if this was available when I was 40, I would have done it then. But, alas, here I am at almost 59 and getting a band. We have different health issues than we did when we were in our 30's and 40's. Good to be here with you'll.

I am so glad to see others posting in this thread. I figured that there

must be quite a few of us in their 60's since Medicare will pay for it

They must have decided that paying for this surgery will be cheaper in the

long run than paying for knee surgery and heart bypasses, etc.

I am losing slower than I would like too, but I recently started

going to Water aerobics so I hope the little bit of exercise I can

do will help with weight loss.

I have had my band filled 3 times, and I think this is the right amount

for me. I am afraid to get more, because I have thrown up a few

times when I forgot to eat slower. It's hard not to gulp food down

when I am so used to eating so fast, but I am learning to eat slower

so I don't throw up.

Okay, this 63 year old is here to tell you it can be done. It was my last hope and I went into it as a sick, depressed agoraphic old lady with diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and using a walker to get out of bed in the mornings and taking 11 perscription meds a day and weighing 350 pounds.

Six months later..... I was 10 years younger, was walking a mile a day, was off my blood pressure meds, off anti-depressants, and getting out of the house.

A year later .....I was 20 years young, walking and working out at the gym, completely off diabetic meds and arthritis meds, drivng and taking vacations and doing all my own housework and shopping again.

Now, a year and a half later.....I'm off all meds except a diuretic and protonix. I have a life again and a future as well. I recently had my fat apron removed (a panniculectomy) and that was a wonderful advancement in my mobility and my appearance. Maybe I'll have a little more work done after I get to goal.

It has been my observation over the past couple of years that most of the older wls patients do very well. Most of us are choosing to do this out of desperation.....we are doing it for our health, for our future, not just to be able to fit into a cute pair of jeans. If I never reach my goal, it's okay.....every pound I have lost already (152 pounds so far) have made my life better so that makes it all worthwhile. It has also my the lives of the people who love me much happier....my son doesn't worry about me as much, my husband doesn't have to do all the work around here, my mother gets to live with me and not in the nursing home because I can take care of her now. What more could we ask?

Best wishes to you.....

Gayle---Yours is the most inspirational story I have ever read. You give me encouragement. I too am depressed. I too am diabetic and have arthirtis. I have had knee replacement and just recently hip replacement that is still giving me problems. I cannot shop for long periods of time and cannot do most of any housework because of the pain I have after being on my feet. I do not want to wear a cute pair of size 10 jeans either. I do not want to wear a skimpy top. I want to feel like a human again. Be able to walk without the use of a cane. I want to be able to walk into a restaurant with my head held high. You put the words down exactly like I feel.

I will get my band on Aug. 27th. That is day after tomorrow. Seems like I have been on this liquid forever!!! I have lost nearly 10 pounds however. I will be 59 years old in October. Thanks for your encouraging words. I just read them out loud to my husband. Gives him hope that soon he will not be doing nearly all the house chores!!!!

Wowee Gayle and Claramae... Your stories sound awfully familiar... The only thing is that I am not a diabetic (YET).. My DH is so understanding when it comes to me walking and stopping to rest, helping with the housework, etc... I am soooo happy to hear that I can live a normal life again and not have as much pain.... I can hardly wait until I can participate in my grandchildren's activities instead of trying to find excuses of why I couldn't make it..

God Bless all of you and wishing great success on your weight loss journey..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
