Which Food Did (Or Will) You Miss the Most?

Recommended Posts

It’s no secret that you have to give up a lot of foods starting on the pre-op weight loss surgery diet, and it takes a while for those foods to come back. If you have the gastric sleeve, for example, solid foods like nuts and raw veggies may not be back in your diet for a couple of months.

And foods like ice cream, Cookies, chips, and pizza? Or your previous favorite restaurant orders? They may never come back, unless you have a lot of restraint and are eventually able to eat them in tiny portions.

It’s always interesting to find out which foods you miss. Some are pretty predictable, like longing for a plate of Pasta or craving a Coke. Sometimes, though, it’s the most unexpected foods, even perfectly healthy ones, such as almonds or carrots, that you miss the most.

If you’ve had weight loss surgery, which foods do you miss the most? If you’re already a few months out or more, which foods did you miss the most, and did they make it back into your diet? If you’re pre-op, what do you think you’ll miss most?

My list of things I miss is a bunch of carbs - macaroni and cheese (the homemade kind with cheese), ramen noodles, warm, freshly baked bread, and a giant bowl of chex, frosted flakes, or fruity pebbles. Fortunately, my snack favorites like almonds and roasted chickpeas are still easily tolerable and good for me, so that's nice. :)

Breakfast burritos and quessadillas from the taco shop. It's what got me in this position. I do miss them but I figure at some point, I can take a bite of someone else's lol. Otherwise, there's no way I could eat that.

Were not supposed to have almonds?? That's my every day snack!

I don't miss anything! I just don't crave the junk like I used to and when I do indulge I am like eh that was ok. No need to eat a ton of Cookies or cake or chips. They don't have a hold on me anymore. But if I want some I eat it and move on. That is not my norm, my norm is choosing what is best for me. If you treat this as a restrictive diet you will go off eventually. Make life changes instead.

It's not a certain food, it's the mini portions I have to eat sometimes. Thinking of invitations to dinner at certain events etc. (luckily that comes around only a few times a year so there's not much to miss).

I miss chocolate! and Diet Pepsi or any soda that is diet.

I lost my sense of smell this is the 3rd year were going on. Yep and over the years it has effective my taste, chocolate is no, chips is no, anything that has any chocolate in it, peanuts an Peanut Butter. I guess this has helped me, but I sure miss smelling and tasting those foods again!

The other day I could've gone for a large coke from McDonald's. Theirs is the best. But, I miss eating sweets the most granted that's what got me here, I wish I could eat them in small portions but I've never been able to

I don't miss anything and don't feel deprived of anything. I eat everything that I want. The only difference is that I want different things now. I still eat things that are considered unhealthy like chips and Cookies but a lot less than I used to

I really thought I would miss coca cola a lot, but so far, 5 months out, I'm really fine without it. Other things I love I have found healthy alternatives if I want them. (such as a shake or Protein bar when I am craving chocolate)

For me, it's a no brainer.

Pasta. I miss Pasta. :(

I am now over 5 years post op, and my sleeve will not tolerate pasta. Not even a forkful, without the yuckies or dumping.

Please, do not suggest "veggie" strands of any kind as a substitute. Pasta is pasta.

So, here I am eating "Miracle Noodles", missing pasta, --------and counting my blessings. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
