Gallstone medication - reactions?

Recommended Posts

I am being prescribed Urso, which is a medication to help dissolve gallbladder stones and sludge. Has anyone used this before? What side effects did you get? Makes me nervous that one side effect is thinning hair, especially since I could get thinning hair just from getting the sleeve, which was done on 5/20.

@@ajg91342 Just wondering why they aren't planning to remove your gallbladder? Did you have gallstones at the time of your surgery? I have not heard of the medication - I had to have my gallbladder removed as an emergency several years ago.

I've not heard of this either. I had my gallbladder removed as an emergency last year because of gallstones. I asked specifically if there was a med I could take instead and they said there was nothing for gallstones except removal. Now I'm mad because that surgery was horrible!

Good luck!

@@KristenLe I don't have any stones yet, but do have sludge which can eventually turn into stones. Since I have no pain (although mild nausea throughout the day), my GI Doctor wanted to try the medication first. If I don't improve, then he will consider surgery.

I am still pre-op, scheduled for bypass on July 28th and my doctor already prescribed the Ursodiol for when I return home from my hospital stay. For me i guess they are doing it for preventative measures. I have not had any testing done so i think its just to make sure i do not have any stones. They also prescribed some injections for blood clots and an acid reducer for my stomach. i have no idea how i am going to keep the two pills down if everyone tells me that after bypass they can only have chewable medication at first. We will see.... I hope it all works out for you!

Finally! Someone besides me has to take this medicine! I was prescribed it by my surgeon for the exact same reason! It's $400 per bottle (yikes! Thank God for insurance)!!! I've only been taking it for a week so no problems yet.

I was prescribed ursidol also, I was told to take it for 3-4 months for prevention of gallstones. I'm 4 months out and haven't had any side effects I know of! So I'm not sure if the thinning hair is from this or the surgery!!

I'm also on this medication (twice daily). The plan is to take it for six months. So far so good with no real issues. It is kind of pricey so thank goodness it's not a long term regimen.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
