How do people lose 40 lbs in a month?!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm two weeks out tomorrow and haven't lost a single pound in the last week.. I drink two Protein shakes per day, Water, and eat yogurt or pudding and have a Popsicle usually.. I'm getting about 70 g of Protein, 60oz of Fluid on average, etc.. I don't understand how people lose so much?! I've been stalled a week.. I lost 8 lbs since surgery on 6/20 but haven't lost anything in the last week. Answers?

That's a good question! While I would love to lose more each month...that would be kind of freaky! I'm 4 months post op and have lost 55lbs. I've had many stalls which is frustrating but it's part of the process....my Dr told me it's our body's way of "catching up" with the rapid weightloss ...whatever that means...lol

Initial weight loss is relative to a lot of things, but mostly BMI. The higher the starting BMI the more dramatic initial weight loss may seem. It really doesn't do much good to compare yourself to other people,

Just follow your program. It sounds like you need to focus on getting in more fluids and protein based on the numbers you reported in your post.

The sooner you can get in all of your protein and fluids, the better in my experience.

Embrace the Stall

Well first they are usually men.

Usually bigger men too. I lost 37 pounds in 3 weeks but I started at 420 pounds. If you are only in the 200's, that's 20% of your weight vs less than 10% for me.

When was the last time you gained 8 pounds in a week? Why would you expect to lose it faster than that? You are setting your expectations at the highest, most unattainable levels and will be disappointed. Put your scale away, focus on healing and set yourself up for success by following your plan. The rate at which you lose has absolutely nothing to do with your long term outcome.

Well I never did, and I started at a very high BMI and followed an extremely strict post-op regimen to the letter. The most I ever lost in a month was 20 lbs, and that was one time at the very beginning.

I still managed to lose over 200 lbs and go from a 6X to a 6. Hang in there and focus on the long game, not what the scale said yesterday or what it might say tomorrow. You can control what you eat, how much exercise you get, and your stress and sleep levels (both important for weight loss). But you can't control exactly how the scale responds to that. The sooner you give up expectations of seeing losing x pounds per month, the happier and less stressed out you will be. Good luck!

don't understand how people lose so much?!

@@Mjohnson4631

kudos for following the Protein, Water, etc rules

"we all lose weight in different time periods"

"one thing we have in common, is that we're all different"

OP that start with a large #, tend to lose a lot of weight at the beginning

especially men - those fiends!!

that's great that you lost 6 lbs in the first week

no loss 2nd week+, disappointing sob sob

this does happen

eating as few calories as you do

the weight must come off, inches too

"God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up About It" ;)

a stall does NOT mean one week

a stall is at least 3+ weeks

i'm betting you will win

better yet - "lose"!!

good luck bud

you'll do great!!

kathy

That first stall is the worst. At least it was for me because I had failed in so many previous weight loss attempts that my confidence that the surgery would work for me was low. But after 2-3 weeks the scale started to move again. After the first 2 weeks after my surgery when I was on Clear Liquids only and lost 20 lbs. I am now losing an average of 1-2 lb per week. After 8 weeks I am down 28 lbs and weigh less than I have in 26 years!

My dr told me, the more you have to lose the faster it comes off at first and men tend to lose more.

I'm 3 months post op and I'm down 57. I've had two people tell me I should be down more in 3 months but who knows.

All depends on your body and what you're doing

@@applejenn I hope you told those people to screw! That's nearly 20 lbs a month - that's excellent!

No, at first I was really bummed and made me second guess myself and what I've been doing. Now, I'm just like oh well. Everyone is different

Well first they are usually men.

Damnrite !!!

Finally....having a penis matters in something significant. Heck yes.....bring it !!!

I've found that one thing really seems to be universal among all the wls patients, both with and without a penis, is that we tend to lose more in that first post op month if we had good momentum going into the surgery. Our bodies are flushing out the Water weight and the post-op inflammation more quickly. Just my broscience theory.......

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
