Those who drink diet pop post-op {Only nice comments PLEASE}

I am aware this is a hot topic..

My surgeon discourages drinking diet pop but I personally enjoy diet pop.. I've never found it a "slider" food for me on any previous diets.

And I know several surgeons DO say it's okay..

I've heard that surgeons say drinking diet pop will stretch your sleeve. I have a feeling this is a scare tactic either because a lot of docs just don't support diet pop and the artificial sweeteners that are in them or are worried about them being "slider foods" so they just say "Oh it'll stretch your sleeve" If it would really stretch your sleeve wouldn't all surgeons be united in agreeing that diet pop is bad?

I'm basically wanting to hear from people whose surgeons DO agree with diet pop so I can get another opinion on the matter. Why have your surgeons said it's okay.. what do they say to the "it'll stretch your stomach" (myth?) What guidelines do your surgeons give about drinking it.

And also how soon after your surgery did you try diet pop for the first time?

NOTE: If you don't agree with my decision to potentially go against what my surgeon suggests please don't lecture me.. I'm well aware and on most things I follow the rules.. but I'm also smart enough to know that if some surgeons allow it there is a reason and I want to find out and have second opinions and I don't feel that's wrong. I've encountered a lot of hostility here toward people who dare to question what their surgeons say so if you don't agree please just ignore this post. THANK YOU.

Damn ladies.... I was looking for a reduction there too. Unfortunately the weight loss hasn't hit the rack yet. That said, I'll happily donate some of that to anyone interested!

I will admit that I only read the first two pages of this topic. I will share my own experience with diet sodas. I weigh approximately 320 pounds and I will be getting the sleeve done at the end of August. The last 30 pounds are the result of me going off of diet soda. I was having multiple strange medical issues including vertigo and memory issues. Was also having some breathing issues that I couldn't attribute anything. I went down to Southern California to visit my grandmother in the hospital and while I was down there all of my issues one away. When I got back home to work and everything came back. I knew that my problems could not have been cleared up by the lovely Southern California air. I started looking what changed when I went down there. I am a cheap bastard I mean Frugal man. At home I was drinking 2 44 ounce diet dr. Pepper a day and sometimes drinking 3. The cost on my fountain drink version of that dr. Pepper was $0.89 a pop. When I went to California all I could find it in was 1 liter soda bottles at 2 bucks a piece. My cheap bastard side, uh I mean frugal side, said hell no to that. Instead I was drinking water. When I realized what was going on I went completely off of the diet dr. Pepper and went to straight water. For about 2 weeks I was doing great and feeling awesome. Most of my symptoms have gone away however I started gaining weight after 2 weeks. At week 6 I had gained 25 pounds! I went to my doctor to find out what the hell was wrong with me. He asked me a strange question, do you like coffee? No. Do you like tea? No. Why? He responded with your metabolism has slowed down because of the lack of caffeine. His suggestion pick up a caffeine habit that is healthier! So I changed up my habits. Very rarely do I drink a soda with the exception of a Henry weinhard root beer when I BBQ or a Mountain Dew when I have Mexican food. 99% of the time I drink iced tea without the ice (because I hate it when it melts) and lemonade. My ratio is 6 parts tea to 1 part lemonade. I know that I have to change my evil lemonade ways so I just bought some of those single packs of Crystal Light Lemonade and I plan to dump that into my tea. Hopefully that will be a reasonable substitute for the lightly sweet drink that I always seem to crave.

^^^^ Fascinating! Sometimes I think each of us is a little ole genus/species unto ourselves.

Ok I've been reading this thread for days. Round and round we go.

This is my personal experience with carbonated beverages post sleeve. It is not to be construed as advice one way or another. Just one person's take on this subject.

I drank a few sips of Dr Pepper about a week post op. Only 3 or 4 small sips because the carbonation made me feel like I'd explode. Nothing bad happened.

I drank a little of it here and there, never could manage more than a few small drinks but I certainly had some any time I wanted it. Nothing bad happened.

At 3 years out I will sometimes get a small Coke or whatever at 7-11 if I want one. I can drink the small size but it takes a while due to the carbonation making me feel like a big balloon.

I prefer Slurpees. I can drink a small one in about 30 minutes and it satisfies any urge I have to drink Cokes. I have one or 2 each week ( ok maybe 3 sometimes) and they are delicious.

Again, nothing bad happened. My sleeve works great, it sure as heck hasn't stretched, and I do not have a problem with gaining weight. If I gain a pound or 2 occasionally I just cut out the candy and slurpees for a few days and the pounds fall off.

I eat what I want, drink what I want, and have done so since week 2 post op. I'm healthy, have a fully functioning sleeve, and am doing very well. No stretching of the sleeve, no uncontrollable weight gain, no adverse consequence.
