Will I eat good foods again?

Recommended Posts

I have a lengthy post op liquid diet and I'm over here dreaming about food. Only three weeks of liquids left!

Anyway - I'm dreaming of lots of healthy things - salads, spicy foods, Indian food.

Will I be able to eat spicy things? Like all I want right now is some chicken stir fry with sriracha! I'm afraid my stomach won't let me eat the healthy foods I love. I know I won't be eating donuts and ice cream but the healthy things I do like....tend to be flavorful and spicy.

Yes, you will be able to eat all the good foods you love again with an emphasis on Protein.

I eat pizza - just the toppings - maybe a bite or two of crust if I have to have it.

I ate spicy chicken the other day... burnt my tong but my tummy loved it :)

Don't tell anyone but I even ate 3 deep fried pickle chunks the other day.. heavenly.

Everyone is different. Some do and some don't. I can eat spicy foods with no issues.

You can worry yourself to death, you know.

Here's the thing. You have to listen to your body. Your sleeve will, I guarantee you, tell you when you've had enough. All you can do is what everyone does: trial and error. if something doesn't work the first time, wait a week or two and try again.

You may find that foods/spices/textures that don't work Week 6 will work just fine by Month 3, for example. Nobody can tell you in advance which way it will go for you.

Just an example. I used to drink a lot of coffee. I loved it. I drink Decaf, but I haven't had a cup of coffee since my surgery nearly five weeks ago - and here's the other thing, I don't miss it. I don't want a cup of coffee.

I wouldn't dwell on what you can't do/have/enjoy - be in touch with your body about what you CAN do.

Yeah, I'm sure that you're right. I just have such a lengthy post op liquid diet (a month - added to my 10 day liquid pre-op diet and I'm looking at over 5 weeks without a single bite of food) that I just have no idea what my body is gonna tell me when I try to feed it!

I just like to hear from other people what their experiences are. There's nothing wrong with that.

my experience at least (I am 7 weeks out almost) is that most of the additional spice I add has been ok - like salsa or rubs on chicken. I did have a serious issue with spicy peperoncini pepper rings the other day - but that was my fault - I had 4 later at night to quelch a pickle craving i was having and my acid reflux kicked in really badly - but other than that i have been ok with wasabi and horseradish and cocktail sauce, but i use in small amounts as flavor boosters.

I made the cauliflower pizza the other day and to me it was like "real food" - I enjoyed the preparation of it and the eating - I loaded it with Protein rich topping and it was yum!

I had my first salad yesterday and I am 5 months out. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's a slow one for sure!!

You're absolutely correct: Nothing wrong with that in the least. Just keep in mind that the learning process after surgery is pretty lengthy. Many of the questions that will occur to you naturally have occurred to most people and will occur to newcomers down the line. The truth is that a good many of the questions have no reliable answers. Five people will describe five experiences.

This is not to say that you shouldn't ask. I'm a great fan of having no unpleasant surprises. Hearing what people have experienced at least lets you [us] know what is possible. Asking is good.

Best wishes as you go along.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
