@@lauraellen80 Ultimately everyone is going to have to figure out what works for them long term. Guidelines from surgeons and nutritionists are all well and good, but only YOU have to live the rest of your life. I do think establishing a good foundation early on by sticking to the guidelines is critical for success, but over time we all have to find our own way. Sounds like what you are doing is working for YOU and that's all the matters!

Lettuce does offer some nutrients.

This food is low in Saturated Fat and Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Folate, Iron, Potassium and Manganese.

Agreed. Especially if it's not iceberg. I have to be honest, I get a little tired around here of hearing people dismiss lettuce (and other leafy vegetables) as a useless waste of space and acting like it's some kind of junk food. I eat salads pretty regularly (I'm 7 months out), though now I load them with Protein, and I usually go for ones made with mixed greens and spinach. I guess I could eat nothing at all but Protein like some people claim to do, but I would prefer to be able to have regular bowel movements. I'm just silly like that, I guess.

I don't eat lettuce and I have a BM every day....

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I have trouble with any raw veg8oiiietables post-op. I am 16 months out and they still cause me to have super uncomfortable gas and burping. Cooked veggies I can handle just fine.

Having BM is not problem for me, but lettuce does not offer enough to me to have the pain that it brings on. Everyone is different and our bodies know what we need and can handle. I was just curious as to how others tolerated it...

I apologize for hijacking your post and taking it off topic. I'm apparently having a bad day emotionally.

Of course if it causes pain to you, it is not worth eating!

I'm sad I can't have a little salad... lol

I'm three weeks post op and I have been told by my NUT that I can attempt it at 4 weeks and see how it goes. Looking at the portions I'm eating now I could eat the veggies off a burger and call that a salad.

I do find it hard to get veggies and fruit in by the time I eat Protein and drink all that Water. I usually just eat a cooked veggie as a snack during the day. Trying to eat it with Protein is a joke as I never have room. I find my self setting times constantly to remind me to eat, drink, take Vitamins, Calcium, etc. I don't think I was totally prepared for how small my stomach was going to be. I'm not hungry, but man I feel like I am eating like a bird.

@@Ronjohn you are really early out of surgery--the way you can eat now is no indication of what things will be like in the future. Your sleeved stomach is still swollen and healing, so give it time! It gets much easier. Right now, just focus on Water, Protein, and taking your Vitamins.

9 months out, and I can't do lettuce. I just cant seem to be able to chew it small enough. It fills me up WAY too fast!

It depends on you body. I had no issues with lettuce and still don't. However Before surgery I probably had lettuce or some other raw veg every day. If you can't eat it now, give it time. Try it again in another 3 mths and see how things work out for you.

Lettuce is one of the more difficult foods to digest. It’s a bit of a shame because salads are definitely easy to make and low calorie and super healthy! At just three months post-op, I don’t think it’s time to worry yet! By the time you can eat lettuce, at least you’re really appreciate it!

Thank you, Alex. I will definitely give it more time!

I am only 3 weeks out so I am not any where near ready to even think about lettuce. I was just wondering if people have the same issues with brussell sprouts? They are one of my fave veggies.

I was told broccoli, asparagus, lettuces, and Brussels sprouts were off my list for a year. Something about the texture being too rough even when cooked. But every surgeon has their own rules it seems.

Wow, a year out? That seems a little excessive.

I guess my surgeon is pretty progressive, as I was having over cooked broccoli two weeks out with no issues. He told me at my two week post op visit that he try's to get patient eating "food" sooner, so your stomach muscles can get back into shape. He said that staying Protein shakes for extend periods prevents for the stomach muscles from getting back in shape, so you can start eating "real" food again.

I am free to eat anything else as of 5 weeks out, except the above veggies and raw nuts. Every surgeon has their own way and to me it's not very restrictive. I was on liquids 2 weeks post-op. Soft foods as tolorate thru week 4. Then week 5 no restrictions other than above. I am ok with following his requirements.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
