Now I know why people lose weight with this band

Recommended Posts

Most of our time is spent over the toilet!!!

I am 3 days post 1st fill, and here I go with the "getting to know my band" period all over again...

I hope this period is over quick, because it is very inconvenient.

When I'm out and eating (which isnt often), the first thing I have to find is the restroom, just in case I have to visit it on an emergency basis. I'm terrified to eat anything except Soup for fear that its not going to go through.

Is it just my band or most bands that dont like any form of bread? ?? I just had a lean cusine panini (well, 2 or 3 bites) before I had to visit Mr. Toilet and I have been suffering since. Agghhhh!!!

It gets better, right?? Or should I just tell myself that Soup is the best thing on the planet and start LOVING it????

Its not just white bread that blows up in the pouch, its all types of bread and other things too...most thing just dont go through the band which causes everything to come up and out..

Cyndilou..you made me laugh...yes, I wish a lot of different foods got along with the band, I'm starting to think this band has NO friends..oh except for liquids, it LOVES LOVES liquids....

HI.

I guess I was told that before I had the banding that bread was one thing that I was going to have to give up, but I know some people still eat it, but If you get sick why do u still keep eating it? I guess I was never a big bread eater before the band, so It really don't bother me to be without. Good luck!

My band doesnt hate bread, thank goodness.

But yes, providing you pay attention to where you're going wrong it will get better. Small bites, chew chew chew, stay away from foods like bread if they dont agree with you.

I never had an adjustment like that. I never PB'd until after a year of being banded, and I"ve only done it twice in 18 months. But I had a cast Iron gut before banding (I can remember going out for Greek with friends and everyone got foodpoisoning and was vomiting for days, two were hospitalised. Not me, never even a gurgle from my stomach, and I ate the same things). True to form, my band is absolutely problem free, I can eat anything and dont have really tight restriction even at 2.9 mls. Just lucky I guess. The whole family gets gastro, I escape it, every time. But dont come near me with a headcold!

Take your time, eat as if you're trying to swallow ground glass and I found the MOST important thing for me to do is not the tiny bites and chewing but its WAITING between bites. Wait for a minute, give the food time to make your stomach and see how it sits before you take another bite. This is what I find hard. Nobody notices the small bites and lots of chewing but when you just sit and dont touch your plate, they comment. And if you're eating during your lunch hour etc, it can be bloody inconvenient to take so long at it. But you have to wait between bites.

I find I can get 4 bites of food in and swallowed before I realise the first one is not going down right and then its too late to do anything about it, the golf ball feeling and sliming are inevitable.

:help:My sister just got banded on Monday. I am having my surgery in Sep. but I have been asking her all about it so I will hopefully be more prepared! She was telling me that you can never have milk again, not even skim, is that correct? Also, she was mentioning no skin of anything. Potatoes, apples, they all have to have no skin (peel) Any comments or thoughts would be helpful!

Thanks!

Melissa

None of that is correct. Where do people get this information? Is it from the doctors?

If you can tolerate skins you should eat them, they're good for you, contain lots of fibre and a good proportion of the valuable nutrients in the foods. Milk, why on earth would that be a problem? I mean, you shouldnt guzzle a litre of it at a time, or drink milkshakes simply becuase of the calories, but milk isnt forbidden!

I have found that I can eat small amounts of toasted or crusty whole grain bread like what they sell at panara bread. but only very small amouts at a time and my jaw gets a workout because it takes a longtime to chew. It is important to chew, chew, chew.

I was told up front to never have bread, Pasta or tortillas until I knew what they will do to me. The bread does expand in the stomach and can cause great pain. I am now able to eat brown rice, but not white.

I am amazed at some of the things people are told or not told by their Drs. It is pretty darn scary if you ask me!

I was banded 9 days ago and am fantasizing about getting to mushies! Does wraps (low carb, spinach, sun-dried tomato) go down easier when having a sandwich as opposed to bread or a sub roll?

The doctors cannot tell you up front what to avoid since its different with every body...boo boo kitty....as you read here on this thread, some people can eat bread and others simply cannot!! It takes time to get to know your own band, and that is what I am going through now.

Thats what this thread was initially about, how it takes time to get to know what makes you feel bad after you eat it....it wasnt really about bread.

But since someone asked if its easier if its in a sandwich form....uh...no...its all the same.

But dont get me wrong, I am so happy I did it...vanity prevails...I never was a bread person anyway....the only thing i'm going to miss are my Lean Cuisine panini's...but hey, thats okay.

I lost 25 lbs in the 1st 6 weeks and I can honestly say, those last 3 weeks I wasnt exactly an angel in terms of eating well.

But now that im restricted I have no choice but to be good, so hey, NO REGRETS!!!

The GLUTEN in the bread is the real culprit.. take a piece of white bread, wad it up in your hand and pour Water on it..... it gets all goopy, and that goopy gluten acts like a Cork (depending on how tight your band is) small cork or large cork.. and either you wait for it to disolve or it come back up...... it is even the way the food is prepared.... toasted, crispy bread/tortilla's go down NO problem... soft and doughy give me the cork syndrome........ but everyone is different! For instance.. I can not eat refried Beans... GO FIGURE..

This week my problem food is chicken...

Oh and Milk goes right through my band.... as does icecream and most CRAP food.

it is so true what they say........... the band helps you to eat LESS.. it doesn't make the decision between FISH and ICEcream....... that is all on me.

If I read this correctly you had your fill 3 days ago, correct? You are too tight. You should be able to consume up to 1/4 cup of solid Protein. I would get a slight unfill.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
