I've been reading a lot of posts on Hair loss. It has me very nervous . I am 5 weeks post op and haven't experienced any hair loss. I am getting my grays colored tomorrow. My question is, has everyone experienced hair loss? And if yes, when did it start and when did you start to see re growth ?

I am 6 months out...I started to lose hair by the 4th month...and it has Fallen out in massive quantities :( I am in month 6 and while I'm still losing...it seems that it is starting to taper off...and I see new hair growing in...:)

Almost EVERYONE experiences hair loss. I've seen a few rare exceptions. A very few.

Look, it's really not a big deal for most people. I would estimate I lost 25% of my hair. Luckily, I have (had) very thick hair, so it was only noticeable to me and my hairdresser. Although at going on 17 months out its pretty much stopped and most has grown back, my hair is a bit finer and thinner now. But I'm also a bit finer and thinner now, too, so I'll take that trade off any day ;)

I lost mine between month 3.5-5 I'd say about half my hair volume. Luckily I have enough hair for like 10 people so it's only noticeable when you touch it. Also it seems to have stopped/slowed considerably recently so I hope that's over. Not fun, but was expected.

I'm 4.5 mos post op and have seen a tremendous amount of Hair loss. I have pretty thin hair anyway, so it's a bit concerning. Everyone tells me it should stop in a few months... At least I hope so....looking forward to new growth starting :)

I started to lose my hair at about 5 months and now at 8 months out it has slowed dramatically. Although I was very conscious of it no one else noticed. I do have lots of hair and it is growing back

I have quite fine hair, and not a great quantity of it. I'm yet to be sleeved, and this is one of my biggest concerns! I've spent the last 3-4 years growing out the nasty, brittle, box coloured hair, and reforming it to its long, healthy state. I don't want it to go...

But, I suppose it's easier to buy a wig than a skinny suit! Haha

Thank you everyone, it looks like the 4-5 month is when it happens, at least I know now and can somewhat prepare myself

Here's an article on post-op Bariatric hair loss that might help:

https://www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietitian/understanding-hair-loss-after-bariatric-surgery/

From what I can gather, hair grows in cycles with 5-15% of our hair being in a "resting" phase at any given time. Normally at the end of that phase it resumes growing. But for us, hair that was resting when we had our surgery will typically fall out, being replaced with new growth. The resting phase lasts 1-6 months, with an average of 3. In addition to that, stress can cause other hair that is nearing the end of it's growth phase to slip into a rest phase, and subsequently and fall out as well. The bottom line is that most of us will experience Hair loss, somewhat abruptly, at a point during the first 6 post-op months.

It's normal.

And it does grow back.

Mine started at almost exactly 3 months out and it is slowing now that I am just past 6 months...luckily for me my hair is really thick so it didn;t really make much of an impact...just have those short hairs showing that are growing back. I have also been on a hair, Skin and Nails supplement for years (Biotin) that I really do think has helped.

It will grow back, so try not to freak out too much :) Hope this helps!

Blessings!

I am really worried about hair loss too, I have really thin hair as it is.

I have bought the entire Nioxin kit (number 4) & plan to start using it straight away after surgery in addition to Viviscal (a hair supplement) perhaps it can slow down the loss but I guess I won't know for months if it works.

I had Hair loss beginning around 3 months post surgery. It lasted about 3 months. I had a ton of hair so the loss was only noticeable to me and my hair stylist. I never stopped coloring my hair during the falling out phase and it all grew back! Good luck!!

I am about 3 months out and it's pretty rough right now with the loss... my hair is thinning out but still the same length and pre surgery.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
