Do your research and talk to your doctor.

Having had the sleeve and now the bypass I definitely suggest the bypass at your starting weight. You will have better results. For me I have better restriction and feelings of fullness with the bypass than I did with the sleeve.

You will have great success with either surgery. With the sleeve i have good restriction and feeling of fullness.

With bypass you also have malabsorption and dumping

same here and same reasons I chose sleeve over bypass.

I started out that high but lost about 60 lbs pre-op (including the two-week liquid diet). I had the bypass - but that was more because I had GERD. Both surgeries can be very successful if you follow the plan. And btw - not everyone dumps. And even those who do can control it by severely limiting sugary and fatty things.

This is why it is so important to research. Just because you choose bypass does NOT mean you will have dumping, when people assume that, they are not as educated on the differences between these surgeries. There is only a small percentage of people who get dumping syndrome and if you follow the rules, it doesn't happen.

Also bypass has the malabsorption process which AIDS in weight loss.

There are other health factors that play a role in which surgery you choose. I big differentiator is whether or not you suffer from reflux. If you do, your best option would be bypass as bypass cures that disease, same thing with diabetes.

The sleeve also puts some peoples diabetes into remission but it can make reflux even worse or if you don't have it, this surgery can cause it.

Both surgeries require labs and Vitamins for life.

You can lose a lot of weight with either surgery.

I would suggest going to a class or taking an online class and learn as much as you can before deciding.

I was going to have the sleeve and after learning about the reflux issue, I chose the bypass. I thank goodness everyday that I did.

I am down 135lbs and 10lbs from my goal. My starting weight was 310.

Anyone here around 360 pounds when they had surgery? What surgery did you have? When? How much have you lost? I am not sure whether sleeve or bypass is best for me since I am pretty heavy and see that a lot of sleevers weigh less than I do. Thanks!

I was 370 when I decided to have the sleeve. My driver's license says I was 375 but I'm pretty sure my highest weight was in the 380s. I got sleeved on May 12 of this year and in the past 7 months I've lost 147 lbs to date. I now weigh 223 lbs and my goal weight is 170 lbs. The last time I was at my goal weight was 1997. Either surgery is good. Bypass does produce about 20-30 lbs more average weight loss than the sleeve but it also has more complications and higher mortality rates. If you are really indecisive then I would suggest you speak to your doctor and see what he or she recommends. Good luck!

if anyone gives you a recommendation, immediately DO NOT listen. No one can decide for you. i started at 362 and 1 year and 2 days later hit 170, Now i am not saying you will do that, im just saying that either surgery can be the one for you. Or no surgery might be your option. It is totally up to you, no matter what you MUST overcome the reason you have food issues. That is paramount. Many people with the sleeve or bypass, are successful and also many fail. For me, i couldn't take my innards rerouted, But that's ME, and I cannot take your journey for you. Nor can anyone else.

This has to be totally about you. If you cannot get past the food issues and cannot understand that no one else but you matters in this, then dont have the surgery. Failing is one thing, failing after having either surgery, is a hell i wouldn't wish on anyone.

I weighed 305. Dr. recommended sleeve as faster recovery time. I felt fine, if not a little sore, for about a week. I am 4 weeks post op and from the pre op diet to now I have lost 40 lbs. More pre than post op but I've been working out a lot and the nutritionist said to just take body measurements and the inches are falling away. I wanted sleeve because I read about dumping and malabsorption and figured I have enough issues without having to add that to the list. The only hunger I am having is real hunger. I don't know if they can do the bypass laparascopically but I was afraid to risk an open surgery being that big. I could only image what it would have taken to sew me back up. LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
