After END was told had to have BiPass instead of Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I had my endoscopy 2 weeks ago and it reveled, after the biopsy, I had areas in my esophagus and top of my stomach damage due to acid. My doctor told me that he would have to do the BiPass instead of the sleeve. I had reflux over 10 years ago and took meds for it. For years now I have not suffered from it, but looks like the acid done damage.

I have one more visit with my PCP next week and then they can submit my papers for decision/approval. I am hoping for a surgery date late February or first of March 2016.

Was just wondering if anyone had been planning for the sleeve (that is all I have been reading up on the last 4 months) and had to change to BiPass mid stream?

Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do! ????????

yes - not me (I was told early on that bypass would be better for me because I had GERD), but lots of people plan on sleeve but then find out that bypass would be more appropriate for them. I went with my surgeon recommended (bypass) - in my case, no way did I want to risk having the GERD get worse (it went away completely with the bypass)

No I did not have to make this sudden change however I have had the sleeve and converted to the bypass. In my opinion gastric bypass is much better for restrictive weight loss. I am very happy to finally have the bypass. Don't worry you will be fine with the bypass probably better!!

I had the choice of either, and I initially went in wanting the sleeve. But as I got closer to surgery I changed my mind and went with the bypass. I had concerns over the GERD issues I'd been reading about. Plus I felt I'd be more successful, personally, having the benefit of both restriction and malabsorption.

I've had no regrets. Good luck!

My doc said at the first educational session that he would not do the sleeve on anyone who had gerd/acid reflux/took prilosec or other meds for it. He said the sleeve usually makes it worse. As a result, I had RNY.

I was changed midstream as well. Caught me COMPLETELY off guard being the fact that my last handful of months had been focused primarily on the sleeve. But after hearing his reasoning and doing some research, I quickly came to peace and actually felt a bit of relief. For some reason, losing majority of my stomach was more bothersome to me than I wanted to admit.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
