This Hair Loss is Horrific

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, its been maybe 6 months since my surgery- I read on here about possible hair loss starting at month 4. And it happened, and it's getting worse. Like, when I shower, brush my hair, it just keeps coming out. Seriously is reminds me of a horror movie. It's all over my carpet, even on my clothes. I'm shedding! I took a pic recently and noticed that you could see my scalp much more clearly than ever.

So whats the deal, when is this going to stop? I'm scared. I met with my nutritionist about 2 weeks back, and she said that it would stop (didn't say when) and told me to take Biotin (I am) and make sure to get 60 grams of Protein.

Any other advice? :(

It happens. There is nothing to prevent it. The drastic changes in your body and diet threw your body into panic mode. It reacts as if the boat is sinking and throwing worthless stuff over the side will help the boat stay afloat. The Biotin will help your hair regrow. There is no set timeframe for how long it lasts.

Also up your Protein. I am for 90 to 100g a day. Maybe it will help.

You can get over the counter rogaine to massage into your scalp. I think the generic name is minoxil.

Once you stop using rogain the hair falls out. I spoke to a friend who owns a beauty school.

Agree with the upping the Protein. 60 seems really low for 6 months out. I was told to shoot for 80+ grams once I was able to eat solids.

I been having the same problem, Hair loss is really bad. I been taking Biotin since surgery day and my Protein intake is between 90-100 grams, however my hair loss is really really bad. I went yesterday to the store Vitamin Shoppe and bought silica in pills. I will start taking those today hoping this will help some.

hi everyone.... I felt the same way as you. Yes - took Biotin, yes - use Biotin Shampoo, yes - upped Protein to 80 g.... still lost hair. At 7 months is lessened and now at 8 month I see new growth. You will come out of it... promise.

There's nothing you can do to stop it. If you use rogaine or the likes then a side effect is increased shedding at first and when you stop using it your hair will continue to shed. Just cut your hair short and don't fuss with it. When your weight stabilizes then your hair will grow back.

I cut mine shorter (to my shoulders), wash it about every three days, keep pulled into a "soft" pony tail. I also sweep the floor daily, clean the drain in the shower and wipe my bathroom counter off religiously - to keep from looking at all of the hair.

I am almost 7 mos post (this Sat) and the Hair loss started about 3-4 months ago and seems to have slowed down a bit...so has the weightloss (from about 10-12lbs a month) to about 6-7lbs a month.

I am okay with both :D

Everyone I've talked with says there's really nothing you can do. I had tons of curly hair and I've lost a TON! Clumps every day. I was sleeved on June 25th. Was 200. Now 140. It's hormones. I haven't had a period in two months. My gyno said it should stop very soon. Doctor said my body is in shock and it's adjusting. I feel great and thin, but I'm going bald!!!! ☺️

Biotin is amazing. I take it daily and my finger nails grow so fast, along with my hair. I now get my hair cut every week because it grows so fast and a mani/pedi about once a month. I recommend the gummies. I buy mine at either Target or on Amazon.

For most folks the hair loss kicks in about 4 months post-op and slows down fast or is over by 8 or 9 months post-op.

It's a temporary situation.

A lot of people try Biotin halt or prevent the Hair loss. But very, very few see any benefits from it.

And my comments are based on reading these boards for 2 years.

Did anybody else have a major surgery prior to WLS and also lose hair then? I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago and about 3-4 months after surgery lost a lot of my hair.

I thought it was more a side effect of the anesthesia at that time.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
