As the posts above show, anyone can make restaurants work as a WLS patient if -- and that's a big, necessary IF -- we are willing to be our own advocate and be responsible for eating what's healthy.

Something others haven't mentioned yet that I do is this: When we're going to a restaurant that has an online menu, I use that to consider what my best options are before we arrive at the restaurant. And if the restaurant is a chain / corporate restaurant (and not all are "fast food"), I look at the nutrition docs re the menu choices' macronutrients (calories, grams of Protein, carbs, fats, Fiber, sodium, etc.).

If I'm going to a fine restaurant that doesn't have an online nutritional guide, I use other restaurants' nutritional guides to guesstimate the fine dining restaurant's choices' macronutrients.

I know that my daily My Fitness Pal records are not "correct to the exact calorie." However, I know from over a year and a half's experience using MFP to plan and track my food that my tracking results are not far off.

I had hot wings appetizer last week and only managed to eat 3 wings, lol! lunch for the next day!

Were the wings breaded? I just started back on solid foods. I thought about trying some wings but everywhere I go here they are breaded and deep fried. We bake ours at home, but it would be nice to go out for them occasionally since my boyfriend loves hot wings.

Yes I do this too. I try to find out where we're going ahead of time and look at their menu online and figure out what I want at home. My favorite so far has been the ahi tuna crisp apetizer at Friday's.

It's def tricky, cause I can't eat a lot of what is offered. Not that I'm not supposed to due to diet, but I can't tolerate it. I've found it's not worth the money! I usually order salmon, any place it's offered. I get grilled veggies with it...small amount of potatoes if offered. I ask for 1/2 the order size and plan ahead to take it home. After about 4 bites, I'm full. If I do mexican (which is great) I get the fajita mix of grilled veggies and grilled chicken. There's usually enough to take home and eat for about 4 days.

Thanks for all of your answers and ideas! It looks like you have it down pat!

For me, the doggie bag is a huge one. I love finishing whatever’s on my plate, whether it’s a reasonable amount or way too much. Packing up half of my meal first, before I start eating, is key for me. It’s such an easy way of keeping my meal reasonable while getting all the satisfaction of eating everything let on the plate.

Some other great ones: going bunless or breadless (or crustless or tortilla-less) and eating only the burger, turkey, cheese, or Beans is a simple trick especially for fast food restaurants. I love the idea of choosing restaurants that serve Breakfast all day and ordering an omelet!

From this thread, it sounds like there’s no reason to fear eating out. Just be smart about it!

One of the early postOp tricks I learned, was to take the waitress aside and quietly 'confer' with her, that "I have recently had stomach surgery and just can not eat much. Can you help me make some kind of reduced size order"?

Also, get the take-out box & put most of whatever you order in it first.I had small 'fish & chips order last 3 or 4 extra meals.

I became very familiar with the Soups available. The first 6 or 12 months mostly I had "CUP" not 'bowl' size order.

Savor each bite. Sometimes I would pace myself with the slowest eater around me; often times either kids or oldOldOLDsters some of whom had various eating troubles themselves.

Learning how to pace myself like normo eaters rather than just jamming it all in as fast as possible and looking for more, was the Old Bad Habit I didn't know I had...that was 'normal' for my early years.

Strive to recognize when "NOT hungry" strikes rather than "full"....'full' is when I had already OVER eaten, while 'not hungry' was the place I never had learned to appreciate.

A few have said that Indian is a good place to go. I love Indian, but not sure what to order. Tandoori chicken would be good. But I'd rather have some saag paneer.

Nothing wrong with saag paneer--just skip the rice and naan. I had paneer tikka masala when I was still in my soft food phase.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
