I had a LRNY GB on 05OCT2015. So as of today I am 22 days post. Down 32 pounds by my scale since the day of surgery, things were going really well until the end of last week. I weighed in on Friday as I always do, was down another 8 pounds and was happy. Then..... I gained a pound. Then another. As of this morning I am .8 lbs below last Friday's weigh in, but here is the thing:

I was walking 5.21 miles every morning. (my body decided it likes the Military routine, so I have been getting up at 0400, not by choice)

I eat < 800 calories a day.

I consume > 100 grams of medical grade Protein (Unjury) daily

I take in somewhere between 70-100 oz of Water a day.

I usually have a Protein shake in the am prior to my walk

For lunch it's another shake or perhaps a yogurt.

dinner, well, it was shakes until last week, I had Ricotta bake twice, and have been eating refried Beans and cheese for the past two nights.

I upped my am walk from 5.21 miles to 6.75 miles as 5.21 was just too easy, I had it down to a little over 1.5 hours and my heart rate was not high enough for long enough, by tacking on another trail (lots of hills!), before 10:00 I have 16K steps, 140 highly active minutes, about 7 miles traveled, 15 or so flights of stairs (I told you lots of hills on the new trail).

By days, end I have burned no less than 4000 calories.

HOW CAN I NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT?

4000 calories out, 800 in, is a 3200 calorie deficit, that's 1 pound a day. I don't get it, and I am starting to get really put out by this.

So what is going on? Any advice before I go postal and adopt an Ethiopian diet of 200 calories a day and go into open revolt against my body?

One (bordering on TMI) caveat, I am not having a daily BM or even every other day, I went from volcano ass, to solid BM's, but they have all but stopped, last one was 2 or 3 days ago. Back on Miralax this morning, I gotta get regular.

Defies logic, doesn't it? But it happens, and trying to figure out why and beat it will drive you mad. You are not even a month post op. Relax, keep doing what you are doing and you'll lose. I didn't even begin to exercise until 6-8 weeks post op. Yup, I had two small gains, I see them as stalls. I never stand still, I gain then lose when I stall.

I'm always cautionary to folks who kick exercise into high gear right away... Your body will seek more activity as you lose, but if you feel it's sustainable then go for it. I'm just not the 2-3 hours a day to work out type person.

Thank you for reminding me, I too never stand still. It's another trick I discovered, if I am waiting for a bus or anything, I am walking laps. The people at the bus station think I am a meth head, but whatever, I get there 15 minutes early, and walk laps around the building for 15 minutes until my bus is ready. Same thing with a Doctors appointment, if I am 1/2 hour early, i'll go outside and walk around the building for 25 minutes then head back inside.

This developed not so much as a healthy choice, it hurts to sit for long periods, I had no ass before surgery, now, it's worse. lol.

Sounds like a combination of a stall and muscle gain. Muscle weighs more than fat, and you're about due for the legendary stall. Keep eating right and working out and you'll get past the stall. No worries.

Tell me more about this "Legendary Stall"......... please.

It's talked about in the support groups. Even mentioned on here quite a bit. Here's from searching "legendary stall." You'll probably find a host of threads by just searching "stall." It's quite common, almost to the point of being expected.

Now I feel like a tool for not searching. I did google it, but kept coming up with sleeve results, and I expect that is different than RNY BP.

Thanks

Muscle mass; body adjusting. Don't weigh in so often; you won't notice it so much.

The first part I guess I get. The second, that's going to be hard. I look forward to getting on the scale, it's like my own little reward for everything I have been through the day(s) prior. Perhaps, for this week, I am better off just checking on Friday and either being happy or really pissed, lol.

Believe me; I get it. I am an IDIOT and some times weigh in multiple times a day. So I'm not preaching; just sharing things that might help. Hell, I want to take credit for a good s*&t!!

it's the infamous "three-week stall" - right on time! Mine lasted two weeks.

I realized that I only lost 2 lbs in 3 weeks. I took someone's advice here and upped my calories just a tab and lost 5 lbs quickly. I am also 8 weeks out so I can eat a little more than you can. I find this whole process to be very frustrating and I know I shouldn't because I've lost 35 lbs and that's more than I would have been able to do on my own.

Dude, that is a TON of exercise for a body recovering from surgery.

I'm preop, so I have no personal experience with the 3-week stall, but postop recovery is something I get paid to help people through. Quite honestly, I'd back off on the exercise and see whether your NUT recommends upping your intake based on the amount of exercise you're doing.

Your body is no doubt VERY confused on a cellular level. You're trying to build new cells to heal and breaking them down with so much exercise. In another three weeks or so, you may be ready to take on this much, but I really, really urge you to slow down. Your body's primary job right now is to heal from surgery, not get up the next hill.

I realize it's kinda counterintuitive, but it's true. Yeah, you only had a few bandaids on the outside, but there's a whole lot of work going on inside. For now, stop focusing on your heart rate and how long you stay there. Try backing off both on mileage and how fast you're walking by about 20-25%. Not forever, just for a couple-three weeks. Then gradually build up again.

Let your body catch up to your motivation, OK? Good luck!

Yes, you have hit the jackpot. You have a stall happening and your exercise building muscle is actually heavier because muscle holds on to that Water.

These stalls can be very frustrating but I promise, it will break. Just stay the course, follow the plan to the letter.

I know when I hit my first stall (there have been many), both my trainer and my nut told me the same thing. Back off the exercise by 15 minutes, increase my caloric intake from 500 to 700 using Protein rich foods and stay off the scale if it was going to make me crazy.

I have since learned to stay the course and it will all work out.

At just under 3 weeks post op I gained weight then stalled for a week and a half. I wanted to scream. I felt like I was doing something wrong. After reading about this infamous "3 week stall" on here, then double checking that I was getting in all of my Protein, Water, & Vitamins, and making sure I was getting some exercise daily, I just let it go. I started weighing in only once a week and also started doing my measurements once a week. It sucked but apparently it really is just part of the process. If you know you are doing things the way you should be, trust that your body is behaving the way it should. I know that's WAY easier said then done but hopefully if enough people tell you they have been there, done that and it's normal you'll be able to get through it a little easier. It really does sound like you're doing great, keep it up! :)

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
