November 10th Surgery Date!

Recommended Posts

Thanks so much for the encouraging words!

Do you really wake up and are not hungry after surgery? I just dont know what that feels like and am so worried I won't be successful. Can you tell me what your experience has been like so far and anything that you read or did that was useful and might help me?

How are you doing 6 months out?

Congratulations to you as well!!

Sarah

I was surprised that I wasn't hungry after surgery, but I rarely am (although I will note that I thought I was very hungry for a few weeks afterwards, but it turns out it was extra acid and once I started a PPI it stopped). I was also worried I would not be successful, I think that is normal for many of us as the reason we are getting WLS is that we have not been successful in the past. I personally believe that the emotional work with this surgery is just as hard (or harder) than the physical and eating changes, so I have been doing a lot of work to support my sleeve such as addressing my feelings about food, my body and giving myself compassion during this journey.

Thanks for asking, I am well overall - down 125 from my highest yet still so far to go. I had my gallbladder out last week because I lost weight so quickly it went bad (my terms, my surgeon was more technical) so please don't take any GB symptoms lightly as I did because then I was admitted to the hospital for my stubbornness.

I think the biggest thing I have learned it to trust this process...you will have stalls, you will have days when you eat more than others and may have days that you wish you had made other choices, but keep coming back to the basics as much as possible: get your Protein in first, drink as many fluids as you can, track your intake, move your body and be kind to yourself, those are my suggestions. I know they sound basic, but when I get back to basics I have found I am most successful - especially when I am struggling with the scale not moving or emotion swings (common after surgery).

Good luck, feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

Hi there,

I just got a surgery date of November 10th. I am very excited but nervous as well. Was wondering if anyone else was having surgery on or around that date? Maybe we could support each other through the pre op diet and the rest of this journey?

Cheers!

I will be having surgery Nov 9th, i would love to support each other thru this journey

Thanks so much @@butterfly23 for sharing your experience. It makes me feel so much better to know what I am feeling is what you felt prior to surgery. Seems like you are recovering very well and getting the swing of things! Congratulations :)

Hey @@all4him and @@aprilarnetta!

That would be great to support one another and go through this together as our surgeries are so close. I plan on starting a preop diet next Tuesday. Have you guys already started or are you starting 2 weeks before surgery?

Where are you guys having your surgery?

I am so excited for my new beginning!!! :)

Mine is November 9th. I start my pre-op diet on Monday. I was originally scheduled for 9/24 but was full of ulcers so it was postponed. However, I have tried to stick to a 2-shake diet per day with one sensible meal. I wanted to be as prepared as possible for my full liquids diet starting Monday. My surgery is in NYC. I'm so excited!!

. Only my husband and my sister know that I am doing this. My children don't know yet that I am having surgery. I decided not to tell my other siblings and my parents as I know they would be unsupportive about this and cast judgment and I don't need that right now. I need only positive energy! how have your family and friends been about it? Have they been supportive if you told them?

Do you guys have to travel for your surgery or is it in your home area?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
