Which weight loss surgery would be best for me?

Okay so starting off this journey I wanted to get the lapband. But after talking to a few people, they've said that the lapband is for people that only want to loose 40-60 lbs. Is this correct? Because I'm. 28 year old 5'4 and 325lbs and my bmi is 55. So that being said which surgery would be the best for me to achieve a weight loss of 180lbs so I would be a healthy weight. Thank you in advance!

Likely you will need to go the an RNY gastric bypass but it really does depend on your current health situation.

Most centers of excellence are getting further and further away from the lapband. There are more complications that require a revision to bypass with that surgery.

If you suffer from reflux at all, bypass is the way to go. It is the gold standard for weight loss surgery and is know for achieving more weight loss overall.

If you don't suffer from reflux/Gerd then the sleeve might be the right solution for you however I would definitely ask questions about how much weight you would likely lose with the sleeve.

I would suggest taking a class (they are free) at your local bariatric center of excellence.

Best of luck to you!

Find a bariatric center near you. Attend the information seminar and ask questions. Ask a LOT. Weigh the pro's and cons against your current health and your lifestyle. Higher starting weights take a bit more commitment to lose, but it can be done. I chose the sleeve because I didn't like the idea of rerouting my organs and I didn't think I would do well with permanent malabsorption. However I had already changed my eating habits and was exercising regularly when I had WLS.

There is no right or wrong answer. Even though it is still not popular for some people even the lapband is a good fit. Most people here will be biased with the type of surgery they choose. You really need to do your homework and find out what's best for you.

Thank you soo much ! I'm going on Tuesday to the seminar. I'm so excited! I don't have any medical problems. But I have been overweight my whole life basically. I just had a baby July 9th and want to be able to get on the floor and play with him And run and play with him when that time comes.

Let me cut to the chase...Lapband is a living nightmare.I have had it since 2004...I was going for a revision to the sleeve but this is my 2nd and last WLS and I have decided to go with RNY....it allows you to lose the amount you need and if you are like me I don't have the time to lose a little?.i want the proven Gold Standard with the history of success and data....Do yourself a favor and research....I thought it was the band...then then the sleeve...finally I have it RNY.I am a few pounds shy of 300 no time to play games..RNY....but it's your choice.

There is a wealth of information on the internet,Studies and data.Research ,Ike crazy and discuss each procedure with your surgeon.Attend a seminar which allows you to meet people and gain more insight. The good this is you are on your way.,,to a better you!!!

Do you have an issue with reflux or GERD? If so, the band or sleeve should be avoided.

How are you at taking pills and Vitamins? If you're terrible about it, then the bypass should be avoided. You will need to take vitamins the rest of your life with the bypass due to malabsorbtion.

As far as success with weight loss, I've seen major successes with each of the surgeries (band, RNY, sleeve). I've also seen major failures with each. It's really up to the individual to use the tool properly, whichever one they get, although the band has had some issues with malfunction causing the patient to not be able to utilize the tool properly.

Make sure you talk with your surgeon about possible complications, healing time, lifestyle before and after, and which surgery will give you personally the best chance of success. Do your own research too!

If you're just beginning the journey, you have some time to decide while complete all of your insurance company and surgeon's requirements for surgery.

Personally, I didn't decide on the bypass until my very last appointment with my surgeon. I told him everything I'd learned through research and he confirmed it would give me the best chance of success. Now I'm scheduled for 9/21.

I promise you'll figure it out! Best of luck!!

Honestly I would choose bypass or sleeve for you my Surgeon doesn't even do the band anymore with 180 pounds to lose I'm thinking more bypass. I have 140 to lose but I am getting sleeve but that's just because I don't want dumping syndrome
