Hi all, I am new here and have a question! I've been lurking around a bit but can't seem to find an answer so I decided to suck it up and post my very first topic!

I am looking into getting Gastric Sleeve surgery. I am leaning towards scheduling something in Mexico because my BMI is normally 32 or 33 and I have no major health issues that would qualify me for surgery in the US. I haven't tried yet to see if I would qualify for some reason so that might not be out of the question.

For those of you who have gone to Mexico for your surgery, was that decision made because you did not qualify for surgery through your insurance in the US and you needed to self-pay? Or for other reasons?

I think most go to Mexico because of insurance not covering them in the US.....After doing their research and picking a doctor they are comfortable and very pleased with the whole process. I hope to be having my sleeve surgery with Dr. Carlos Altamirano around September 18th

@@Dawny28 I am hoping to have my sleeve surgery with him as well. I just finished my Skype call with him and feeling good about the decision. I'm hoping it all pans out. Good luck with your surgeru! I'd love to hear how your experience is with him!

I went to Mexico for a couple of reasons.

  1. I didn't qualify for WLS through my insurance. They had a requirement that you had to have a 5-year documented history of a BMI over 40 or over 35 with comorbidities. Well, I had lost 90 pounds "on my own" back in 2010/2011 and it took me a while to gain it all back, so my BMI had been well below 40 for a big chunk of the past 5 years and had just peaked back over 40 when I started looking into WLS.
  2. I couldn't afford to pay out-of-pocket for surgery in the US.
  3. I'd been to Mexico for surgery before (cosmetic surgery after my earlier 90-pound weight loss) and it was an incredibly positive experience, so I had no concerns about returning to Mexico for surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
