Tortilla Crusted Chili Lime Tilapia - 4 weeks post-op - Too early?

Recommended Posts

I have this premade / crusted tilapia in my freezer. I have eaten it before WLS and it is wonderful. Tilapia is on my list of approved foods for "soft foods" stage that I am in now, but I am just not sure about the tortilla crusted part. (Spicy doesn't seem to bother me.) For one filet it is 28g Protein and 17g carbs. Obviously I won't be able to eat an entire filet because it is quite large for me this early but what do you think about the crust part? Suppose it would be ok? Not sure I can scrape it off. Just trying to decide whether to try them or just toss them if it is not truly a healthy choice because of the carbs. Thoughts?

I say go for it. A tad high in carbs, but like you said, you won't eat all of it in one sitting. Next time opt for the parmesan crusted talapia. A little less carbs. But I love those talapia fillets! I eat them all the time! But I can eat a whole one now :(

OK great! Thank u for the reply! I haven't tried the Parmesan one. Will go that next time. I also have some orange rough filers with no coating but I have to thaw it first and forgot.

You are talking about that fabulous tilapia in the frozen section of costco aren't you! That is really so good! I will be 4 weeks out tomorrow as well!

The only thing I would be worried about this early is the crust. It could cause a dumping episode or more importantly there is a feeling I get when I eat things like tortillas or breaded items. I would describe it as a clogged feeling in my pouch that fills me up very fast, makes me feel like crap and then I get hungry again very fast.

I would go very very slow and listen to your body if you do decide to go for it.

I am 9 months post op and can now eat breaded items if the breaking is super light. I cannot tolerate bread unless it is toasted well and then very little of it. Also, it I do eat it, I feel hungry again fairly soon.

Good luck! I hope it works for you because I know that fish is good.

Thanks @@Djmohr! I'm going to try to scrape most if the breading off then.

I'm waiting to get off soft but wanna get some pecan encrusted Tilapia when I do, the closest I've come to crunchy is buying some egg drop Soup and putting those prices of fried wonton in it, but I'm scared to tear something so 10 more days and I go full crunchy lol

I can tell you what my NUT said, when I asked about breaded or encrusted fish. Absolutely not. You don't need the carbs, and it's too soon for soft diet. Baked only.

Hope that helps. You really should consult your nutritionist on this. Do you have a book of approved foods or not? I got one, from my bariatric center.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. @ Tilapia is on my approved list but no bread other than saltines. I was able to scrape the "breading" off. I was only able to eat maybe 2 oz of it, but it sure tasted good! I also had a tiny bit of roasted butternut squash (dice up really small that I bought in the vegetable section in Walmart). Only got in maybe 1/16th of a cup but what I did eat was also really good. I hadn't had this before and am happy to find a new soft vegetable I can eat. No guarantees it will all stay down I suppose but so far so good....

@carolm1965@Djmohr

I'm sorry guys. I didn't realize she was a bypass! Yes, as a sleever I would eat it becuase as a rule we don't dump.

@@Daisee68 I see you had some and scraped the breading off. Sorry I didn't realize you were a bypass. But aside from the possible dumping, a few carbs from a little tortilla breading won't hurt. Like I said, just choose the parmesan stuff next time :)

@@Babbs - no worries at all! I knew the potential of dumping. It's all good! :)

@@Daisee68 Glad you were able to eat. I love baked Talapia. It stays down fine for me, and the veggie is a great pairing!

How do you all think something like this would cook on a George Foreman or similar type of grill? I'm so ready for soft foods later this week (Friday).

Not sure the crusted one would hold up great as the top of the grill would stick. But it is super easy to stick in the oven for 20 minutes. Even toaster oven.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
