Hi, I'm having my surgery next Tuesday on the 23rd of June and I am so extremely nervous. I have had gastric plication and lap band, which were both removed. Now I'm revising to the sleeve, but I feel like something is going to go wrong or that I will have a complication. Don't get me wrong, I am so excited and prepared, but I just don't know how to calm my nerves!

How did you guys deal with nervousness and anxiety before your surgery?

I had band removal and converted to a sleeve on may 28. I have to say I was not really nervous much. More excited to be getting rid of the band and port. The thing I dreaded to most was getting the I.V. since I am very hard to stick when I am heavy. Just as I feared they had to stick twice to get the first one then that night had to restart again and another two sticks. I knew they had their work cut out for them. I think what kept my nerves at bay was the fact that I had did extensive research on my surgeon and felt I was in completely good hand. I am three weeks post op and the only thing about the surgery was I had sever nausea post op but I expected that. Anesthesia always makes me really sick. Try not to let your nerves get the best of you.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I totally understand about the band and port, I could always feel my band and that was so weird! I have been doing tons of research lately. The forums and making/watching youtube videos has been keeping me semi sane, but the reality of the surgery is hitting me now haha. For some reason my hands are really thin and bony so they never have trouble sticking me, but the iv swells my hand up like a sausage haha

I can tell you from my own experience that the hospital process was incredibly smooth. It was kind of like hanging out. Got a beeper when I checked in. Beeper went off, went to the pre-op room, met with one nurse to go over medical history again. Told her I am a tough person to get an IV going and she called a different IV nurse into the room. Changed into the hospital garb, and then talked to the bariatric coordinator (who had been sleeved herself), until the anesthesiologist came in and put me in happyland. Woke up 3 hours later and it was over. The first week was not a lot of fun...the first full day home was the worst as I now had to get my own fluids in. Only pain I had was at the large incision point, no nausea at all. After a week, pain virtually gone. Averaging about 5 lbs lost per week.

You will do fine. Complications are extremely rare in this surgery. My surgeon has done thousands of these operations and has never had a leak. Worst case if you have a leak is they do a bypass...not the end of the world.

My surgery is June 29 and I've been pretty good until I met with my surgeon today and he told me that I will need to have my gallbladder removed, fix my hiatal hernia and be sleeved, Now I kind of knew this already from my last appointment with him but I was thinking of holding off the gallbladder till later, but he highly advised to take it out since I have two polyps that can pose a risk to cancer down the line, so the risks for my surgery are a bit higher than the average. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow, and at this point, I'm just counting down the days. I may freak out more on the day of surgery.

Oh no, I'm sorry I'm sure your surgery will go very well though! I was watching a lady on youtube who had the hernia repair/sleeve/gallbladder at the same time and her surgery went well! I totally get you about freaking out on the day of surgery...I'm sure I'll be a ball of nerves and emotion!

My surgery is the 23rd too. I'm surprisingly calm about this. I guess because my fear of not having the surgery is greater, now.

Hello everyone. My name is Carol and I'm new to the site. I'm six week into my sleeve and lost 35 lbs. My surgery was very successful with minimal complications. I spent three days in the hospital due to the fact that my stomach rejected everything they gave me and they couldn't release me until I was able to hold down the fluids. I've been ok since. We should not be having no more than four ounces at a time with liquids, pureed food, soft foods and solid foods. Your stomach will definitely let you know when you have had enough. For me I start feeling stomach cramps then I know to stop

Eating right is an adjustment and we must try to be disciplined to substitute the high calorie and sugary foods. We will continue to crave the same bad eating habits we had prior to surgery, however, we get more conscious of the things that we are consuming. I pay attention to the nutritional facts. I watch my carbs, sugar and calories intake per day. I try not to go over 500 calories prior to the six weeks, now I'm at 800 because I transitioned to solids food. I make sure I read everything and if the sugar is more than one gram or two grams I'm not going to have it.

Calories are a unit of energy. If you have a caloric excess you will gain weight wether that be fat and/or muscle. If you have a caloric deficit you will lose weight.

It's about life changes and don't beat yourself up if you are slow to get on board just pay attention to counting carbs, calories and sugar and get your protein in. It help to burn the fat. Good tolerable and ready to drink protein shake is the GNC lean shakes. Strawberry and Cream and Banana Cream.

I also started walking around my neighborhood 3 weeks after surgery. Don't lift anything more than 5 lbs. Try to force yourself to recover quickly don't let it get the best of you. Good luck future sleevers. This is just my experience.
