I have to agree, once a week is not frequent, funny thing is that I have not smoked for the last month because is something that I can stop at free will. To me an addiction is something you can't willingly stop on your own, such as tobacco users who can smoke up to a pack a day. I have recently stopped just because I don't need it, just like I don't need wine - While several months ago, I was having wine every week, I now have wine maybe once every three months, but with Marijuana being so widely used and now being legalized in several states, I was just curious. I am sure everyone has their own perception, and I have agreed for myself that smoking marijuana would not be best for me after surgery, but I would welcome open minded perspectives to this subject on those that have used it and what was the experience.

This topic is merely being presented as an educational topic with hopes that there has been experiences in the use of Marijuana after bariatric surgery. I smoke marijuana maybe once a week like having a glass of red sangria to relax after a long hard week. Although I'm not a frequent user, I am wondering if I will be able to use it after surgery. Fact for me is that it does induce hunger and I am sure this would not be condusive to being successful after the sleeve, but let's be real, there may be users out there who give it try. Unfortunately, there are not any concrete studies on this either like there is for tobacco and alcohol users.
So feel free to enlighten and share your thoughts.
    Thanks!

    HI SueHowie
Thanks for your response and for sharing your experience. I work in the health industry and Marijuana is being widely used to treat many ailments. It is actually being looked as very promising for those looking to other options rather than the use of opioids. Many patients find that it eases their nausea and does help them sleep. I also think the prompt of hunger does vary depending on the individual, but as you suggested, perhaps the use of it should wait until the bariatric patient has had a firm hold on their new sleeve and adapting to their new way of life.
This is great, I am hoping more will continue to share their experiences.

    Thanks Charmia,
Not sure if everyone necessarily feels hunger after smoking weed, but in this case it seems like you took a chance an conquered, but not tempting yourself sounds like the way to go.

    STATUS UPDATE:
It has been almost 4 months since surgery and I have been using marijuana since my for about 2 months now and I have to say it has been great. I have lost 54 lbs and I'm feeling great and going. I exercise 3 to 4 times a week and I'm very active. My life has truly changed for the better and guess what - having marijuana did not hinder anything for me. I stick to having healthy Snacks around like apples, bananas, baby carrots if I get the munchies a bit and it works for me.
Just thought to share as I started this thread and I have not been on here for a while.
    Definitely a positive experience!

No carbs, no calories. Once American women figure this out, it will be legal everywhere. Just saying. (After being in professional politics for 30+ years I have figured out that what women want eventually becomes the law of the land. Doubt me at your peril. It just takes longer than it should because males make up 90% of the legislative bodies and every married woman knows how well we listen).

Thanks so much for posting this! Regardless of negative opinions, topics like this are a reality for some people, and I'm happy for a free and open outlet to discuss them. Thanks for your courage in posting this, and I'm sorry for some of the negative back lash. Don't be ashamed to own your truth. I'm sure throughout a lot of our lives, we've dealt with very hurtful opinions of our weight, and how we got to be our original sizes, and the choice to overcome our weight via surgery. As we all know, it's not about anyone else's opinion, this is something we had to do for ourselves. Keep being honest

I smoke for pleasure and to lessen pain. I use topicals to lessen pain and soften skin. For me it is an amazing healer of body and mind! I intend to continue marijuana use after my wls. Everyone is free to choose how or if they use it. Even my mom and grandma use a cannabis salve I make! ???? ✌

Actually - it is addictive, but it isn't the actual weed that is - its the habit, who you're doing it with or not with - when you do it... thats the addiction. I'm a purely social smoker - I only smoke with others. and that means that if we're not smoking (with someone I'm used to smoking with) I get bored and start craving it. Yes, I can ignore it - as I don't have an addictive personality, but I have a roommate that does and he can't go more then a couple hours without smoking because it helps keep him calm.
and I've seen how some of my friends who would smoke regularly would act slightly different when they aren't smoking and then smoke - then see them act completely different personality wise when they haven't smoked in months. Example is actually my sister - when she was smoking all the time and then on the days she wouldn't she'd be easily irriated and easily annoyed vs when she would go months without smoking - she'd have a lot more patience.
it affects everyone differently, and it depends on the person on if its addictive or not. The actual 'drug' may not be - but your habits make it so.

Hi Chanti, you make a very good point. It is about 5 months after surgery for me and I started to smoke occasionally last month. I also agree on your mention of WLS and the ongoing changes and stressors. Your life definitely changes, your image, personality, moods, and social life. Some stages are harder than others, so it can be quite a challenge. There are so many factors that can trigger cross addiction in people and folks should be very careful on the use of marijuana and alcohol.
    Thanks for sharing.

Marijuana is medicinal, harmless and, if anything will probably support healing. People fearing the munchies are non-smokers. Like anything else, it's what you make of it. Marijuana does not force you to eat, and it isn't addictive.

Ha, maybe they just need to 'light up' instead. Be chill people.
I think using pot in the early post op period is a bad idea. Bad for the respiratory system mostly.
Also, if you can continue to be only an occasional user ie. once a week or less, then I don't see much harm once you are completely recovered. But as others mentioned I would be concerned if you became a more frequent user. I would worry that stressors of WLS and ongoing life changes that occur with same might be a trigger for cross addiction. The comfort of over eating is gone, and it would not be great if pot filled the void.
