Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

Recommended Posts

From what I read OCC is the place where they put you in a hotel room after surgery? Do the have a nurse there with you during your several night stay?

They don't put you in a hotel right after surgery. You stay the night at the OCC after your surgery (nurses check on you throughout the night) then the next day, if you're doing well then you go to the hotel.

I had surgery with Dr. Elias Ortiz last August. I went alone and had a very positive experience. Not one time did I really even feel alone through the whole process. A couple of tips, though...

If you can, add the Google Translate app to your phone or Ipad. That was nice to have. I could communicate on a better level with the nurses. They understand basic care English, but there may be some things that need to be expressed that are not so basic. Also, Netflix. The television has a few English stations in the hospital and hotel, but not many.

You will need some cash, small bills like 5s or 1s to tip your driver and bell hop with.

Don't be shy! I made a few friends at the hospital and hotel that I'm still in contact with today. It's soooo nice to have friends who are traveling this road at the same place as me. We compare notes, chit chat and have gotten pretty close.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions. Not just from me, but this is what this forum is for. :-)

thank you for sharing this Im getting my vsg in 3 weeks and was wondering about the tips how much should I and yeah I'm going alone too im pretty nervous

Yes - thank you so much. The netflix and the translation app I would not have thought of.

Any sleevers heading down to TJ the second week of January?

Also, question to previous patients, what happens to your support person (spouse) while you are in the hosptial? Do they get to stay in the hospital with you or back to the hotel? Do you tip in USD or Pesos? Thanks! Let me know!

Well I'm a few days from my one year surgiversary. I have been maintaining goal for 4 or 5 months. My question now is, I need a boob job. Where is the place to go in Mexico for that? I know OCC has plastics now, but I don't know how long they have been doing it. I currently have implants, with one being noticeably larger than the other and after losing 82 lbs this last year, they are not sitting high enough. They need revamped. Suggestions on good surgeons in Mexico? Possibly Dallas or Austin even.

I'm sorry for taking so long to reply to this. I was out of town on vacation and not checking the forums regularly. I used Dr. Carmina Cardenas for my plastics in 2011 and I LOVE her. I will definitely be returning to her for more plastics, if necessary, after I reach my goal.

When I had plastics done in 2011, I had lost 90 pounds, I had a Tummy Tuck, breast lift with implants, all-over liposuction, and fat grafting to my butt. Unfortunately, I regained 80 of the 90 pounds I lost, so if you look at my gallery pics, you'll see my amazing boobs and how flat my stomach still is, but the Lipo went to waste. I suspect that when I get to my goal weight, I am going to need to do something about my thighs, as I am likely going to have a lot of excess skin on both inner and outer thighs.

@@looznsoozn I went alone, but I know there is a cot for the spouses to sleep on in the hospital.  Everyone tipped in American funds, I think I went threw $200 US in tipping money.

@ looznsoozn, we were provided with a second bed in my room for my mom to sleep in. Your person has the option to stay at the hotel but that is a separate charge and not included in the price of your package.

Hi everyone!

Firstly, it has been so ridiculously helpful reading everyone's posts and advice! You've helped me come to my decision :)

I am getting sleeved next month but I am going against my family's thoughts and advice. Both of my parents are in the medical field and believe that the risks are far too great. I am a lower BMI patient (32) and they think that this is a rash decision.

We've discussed the issue over and over, but they cannot seem to understand my point of view.

I feel horrible going through with this surgery when I don't have my family's support. In my heart, I know it is the right thing to do (as cheesy as that sounds). Any advice? or reassurance ? :-) would be greatly appreicated -- feel free to PM

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
