Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

Hey- one question. How much cash did you bring/ should I bring with me as far as money needed for incidentals at the OCC?

Love the batcave and Poison Ivy, def...you'll rock that outfit by next Halloween :-) LOL

Re cash - I was v generous with tipping (or so I was told) but they did take such good care of us that I felt it was right. So make sure you have some $5's and singles for tip money, especially for the hotel concierge and drivers. I also had to pay $165 on checkout of the OCC for prescription meds (I thought it would be $125 - was pleased I'd taken enough). The lollipops from room service suck (IMO) so I bought iced popsicles from the little store in the hotel (cash). All in all, I think I took $200 in cash with me and I didn't have any left when I got home. We walked up to Walmart and around a few of the open markets too, so if you want to buy some trinkets, you'll want a few $$'s for that. I just did it for the exercise and didn't buy anything. Hope that helps. If you have questions or concerns, I'd be happy to chat with you over the phone. You can send me a private message with your number.

Thanks everyone. I assume they do all of their tricks in the Batcave with all their fancy instruments, gadgets, and state of the art gizmos. I hope they whip my tummy into shape with all their weaponry.

Congrats ringo4 - yes, pack light. Loose fitting clothes (I took far too many, not necessary at all) a couple pairs of pants, t-shirts and comfy shoes. I recommend pants with a drawstring and also a pocket, so I could put your "egg" (drain) into it and not have to hold it or secure it with the waistband, because you'll want to walk around as much as possible. Chapstick (lips gets dry after the surgery and all the tubes etc). Light sweater- the evenings can get cool. If you take sneakers, I couldn't bend, so no laces unless you have someone who can do them for you. I took the usual toiletries but the hotel does provide them so I could have left my Shampoo & conditioner home. I took a pillow with me for the return flight (for my belly) - my travel was long: 6 hr flight and 2 hr bus ride. Hope that helps - good luck with your surgery, you'll do great!

I have another question and its about the Enspira products. I started my 15 day liquid/leafy green diet today and just wondering who used Enspira shakes an who didn't. How are they? The Unjury products so far are okay. I don't want to take 4 Vitamins a day or mix a nasty Vitamin in my shake.

I ordered the pre op package but it hasn't come yet. I'm using Premier Protein shakes with 30 grams of Protein and Unjury.< /div>

Ok. Im also using the Premier and Unjury and also the Atkins shakes to mix it up. I'm not too fond of the Premier but the others taste fine. I think I'm going to get my Vitamins from Unjury and get Enspira shakes for the second week. I've been trying these shakes for weeks now-maybe that was a bad idea :) But I'm going to strictly adhere to the diet so I'll be as close to 10% down as possible.

I'm working on sticking to the guidelines too. I agree about the taste of the Premier shakes. I'm using them for the high Protein count. right now my worst problem is that the Multivitamin I have makes me nauseous. I ordered the Vitamins form OBCC. I hope they are better.

Hey Barb,

I ordered the chocolate Enspira shake just to get me started (I'm having one shake a day until I start my two week program hoping to jump start my weight loss...). The Enspira shake is ok... Just ok. It doesn't taste really that bad, but it's really hard to mix, clumpy. I bought one of those shake mixing bottles from Wal-Mart and it helps break up those clumps. One thing I did notice about the Enspira shake (I'm a label reader) is that the shake mix contains a form of colostrum... And just the idea... I don't know, kind of grossed me out! :) (I'm a NICU nurse...) Lol...

Bring elastic waist pants to have something to tuck your drain into. I brought 2 pairs of jammies with elastic waist and two pairs of yoga pants. Obviously undergarments and shirts - oh and slip on shoes are great so you don't have to bend down to tie them.

If you are able to get to Wal-Mart near the Marriot, get some Vitamin Water and/or Gatorade G2 and leave in the hotel refrigerator so you have something to drink when you are back at the hotel. It goes down so much better than water!

Programs on TV are mostly in Spanish, but I did pay-per-view some movies. Should have downloaded a couple on the iPad. Oh and I wish I would have brought a nice long novel with me. Other than that, you will be set! Good luck!

I just paid my deposit and am completing paperwork for December surgery. I plan on using Premier Protein. I have to say - the pre-op gives me a bit of anxiety!

Yesterday I mixed a Premier with about 1/2 cup of coffee in the morning and it was ok. I'm doing that again today.

Yesterday I took my vitamins with my leafy greens and my tummy wasn't very happy. I'm taking 2 flinstone with Iron vits, one additional iron (no dog blood transfusions for me Hoosier), a colace twice a day, and a B12 ODT. I wasn't nauseous, but the vits just didn't sit well- like if you've ever taken an iron pill on an empty stomach but not as bad.

When I ordered my Enspira, the Multivitamins were sold out. Maybe that's why your things are taking a while. I ordered just one of each shake flavor.

Really... colostrum?! I'm an OB nurse! Most of the hospitals I've worked at are small so I do everything- bad babies... The whole shebang. I guess they heard it was liquid gold and wanted to put some in! BTW one of the places I work is Baby Friendly, and our LC is OBSESSED with liquid gold. That's so crazy :)

I've asked others already but since you're a nurse and you understand those days when you just don't get breaks, how long are you staying off work? Youre NICU, so you obviously dont work at a really small hosp, so just wondering. I'm not interested in going back to work too fast. I KNOW I will not have time to go off and SIP with patients laboring and walking in the door (small hospitals you literally have to do everything). I wonder if they are flexible with allowing you to take more than 3 weeks off because I know if I don't, I'm going to end up in the ED. I want to be as stable as possible before I go back to work. When Dr M said that I should've asked if they would let me take more while I had him on Skype- darn it.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
