Gained 2 lbs......very discouraging

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am about 2 months out of surgery and have started working out a lot. I recently began a pilates program. The weight was coming off very nicely and suddenly today I was shocked to find out I went up 2 lbs. It's obviously very upsetting considering I have been working out a lot. I do feel like I've lost when it comes to the fit of my clothes and the general feel. So, I was wondering if anyone else here has had a similar issue with gaining some weight after starting a new work out routine. Thanks

I can gain a lb or 2 on a daily basis and the next day it's back down. I think it's several factors...water/salt intake a day before/clothes....I weigh once a week at work (professional scale) but about every other day at home. I don't get too excited about it. I've gone up 2 lbs one day and by the start of the next week, been down 5lbs.

Yes, this happens to most people. Muscle apparently has more dense mass than fat does. Take your measurements and judge based on your clothes. The weight will continue to come off, but weight doesn't always go in a straight line downward. You will see it go down, plateau, creep up, go down, plateau. Eventually you will be able to see the trend. My best advice is to weigh no more than once a week. It is easier to see the tend (progress) that way, and you won't drive yourself crazy with daily weight-checks. Good luck! :)

Exactly what @@Teachamy said. Fatty tissue is globulous and takes up space while lean muscle is compact. Yes a pound still equals a pound however a pound of fat takes up more space on your body. So as you burn fat and accumulate lean muscle your weight can fluctuate. The great besides toning and better fitting clothes...the more lean muscle you have the more calories your body continues to burn even at rest, because muscle requires more fuel!

You're doing great!

Normal. Water retention, time of the month, muscle mass, bad time of day, leg hair too long, something stuck in your teeth... Don't fret it. It happens.

Great...now I'll be making sure I shave my legs before weighing! HA! ;)

Don't forget your pits.

Should probably go for the full Brazilian too... just to be on the safe side...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
