Congrats !! Please make sure you talk with your dietician to make sure you get the right amount of calories in for you and the baby. I don't know of anyone this has happened to. Can't understand how you become more fertile, but oh well....things happen.

Again, Congrats !!!

There's actually a sub-forum on the subject of pregnancy after sleeve, where you might be able to get a lot of great answers and advice:

http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/427-pregnancy-with-gastric-sleeve-surgery/

Definitely be sure to talk to your nutritionist right away to find out about Vitamins and supplements and what your new nutritional requirements should be.

I was informed about the increased fertility, so my husband and I used back-up birth control the first couple months (had to use it the first couple of weeks anyway because of the antibiotic). I hope this isn't an unwelcome event for you and if it is, I hope it will eventually work out to be a blessing.

Congrats. Being pregnant after surgery is supposed to be better with the sleeve than without. I envy you. I want a huge family. At least 10 kids. :)

To those lurking this thread, bariatric surgeons regularly and strongly advise WLS women patients and their partners to use not just one, but two forms of birth control for 12-18 months post-op.

Apparently, the rapid weight loss makes women who are still menstruating more fertile. I don't know why. But it does.

Online I've read to wait 12-18 months but my Surgeon advised it was normally safe 6-8 months out.

My husband and I have not been using protection. I use birth control. I'm 11 weeks from surgery and really scared I'm prego. I won't know till next week when my pd starts hopefully.

@@heav85 Did your surgeon not warn you about using back-up birth control post-op?

Yelp. We did for a month then he got tired of condoms.

Um cramping and I should start this week.

@@heav85 If you are really worried, you could get one of those "First Response" tests that allegedly can work as early as 6 days before your period?

I'm 2 months out and just found out I'm pregnant at 40 years old. My last child was 9 years ago and I took fertility meds to get pregnant. We tried for a fourth child five years ago but it wasn't meant to be. We weren't planning on any more and was pretty sure we couldn't get pregnant considering my history. My husband and I only had unprotected sex once so yeah it does give you a boost to your fertility. To say the least this is a definite surprise but is also very welcome as a baby is a blessing.

Nice. Boy oh boy. I really need to be very careful. Had a little mishap and took the morning after pills. I bled from the pills and am just praying I am not pregnant. No can do at the moment with work and living conditions.

So happy fo those who are and wanted to be. Can't wait till my time is right!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
