Couch to 5k

Recommended Posts

Anyone working on this right now? I just started week 5. This is actually my third time doing C25k. I first did it back in 2011 during one of my many attempts to lose weight "on my own", but of course, I eventually fell of the wagon and stopped eating right and exercising and regained all the weight. I did it again in the summer of 2013, but ultimately the same result.

This will be my third time getting all the way through it, but I am hoping that this time I will keep up with the running. I want to run several 5k races this spring/summer. Planning to do at least one per month starting in May.

Congrats Jamie, I am on week 5 myself. I tried the program last year, and damn near blew out my knee. Much easier with 80 pounds less to push around.

Here is a cool tool to help anyone interested in trying this:

I was getting distracted and not paying attention to the timing then I found this cool little site c25kplaylists.com. The music is OK, but the nice thing is the voice prompts to remind me to walk or run. I can concentrate on form and not look at my watch. I just saved the 30 minute song as an MP3 file and put it on my iPod.

Speaking of form - http://www.jeffgallo...m/learn/videos/ Jeff has some great tips. Most important take away, short stride, shuffle, feet close to ground to prevent injuries. When I last tried to start running, I didn't do this and ended up hurting myself and was not able to walk for nearly a week. Two weeks of using this tip has lead to pain free running.

Fantastic! Spring/Summer will be perfect weather for running. I have been looking at my local running events. I'm doing the shamrock shuffle 5K tomorrow. I'm so excited for you. a 5K every month. Post some pic's if you have time. I would love to see them.

What do you think of the C25K app? Is it easy to use? Once you are doing a 5K do they have another app for longer distance run's? (I will look it up)

@@jenn1 I have the app and when I did use it I loved it! You can listen to your own music while it prompts you. I gave up before week 2 because of pain(I tried it before I even considered surgery) but I plan on starting again soon, once I build up some stamina and endurance.

Used the app last year and have now run five half marathons several relays, 10ks 5ks and misc trail distances. Training for a full marathon in may.

C25k is awesome!

The first time I did C25k, I just wrote out the times on a post-it note for each workout and stuck it to my treadmill! Now I have the app on an old iPod Touch that I stuck velcro to the back of and I have the other side of the velcro on my treadmill, so it just sits there on the console and I see the prompts. I always watch TV while I work out in our downstairs rec room. I had to disable the prompts in the app where the coach says "you're halfway done", because I found them too depressing! LOL

But the app is definitely easier than writing everything out on a post-it and having to watch the clock on the treadmill the whole time. If I were running outside and listening to music, I don't think I could possibly do it WITHOUT the app to prompt me about when to run/walk.

As for my plans after completing C25k, I have no intention of running longer distances, but I do want to improve my speed. So I have this idea to re-do C25k and run at my current, slow pace for the "walk" portions and then just increase to a faster pace for the "jog" portions. I'll have to post again once I know how that works out!

I'm getting ready to start!

Just to warn you, the first three weeks are pretty smooth, but there is a HUGE ramp up in the total amount of running in week four. Be prepared for that!

I just finished week 1 of the C25k. It was much easier than expected. Now I just have to stay motivated to complete all 8 weeks. It does help me stay motivated, knowing people are watching my progress.

Completed the program, my first race is this Sunday. My goal: Not to be last in my age group. It's a modest first step, but a tremendous milestone in my life. Very happy and satisfied.

Congrats! I had to take a bit of a break from my C25k training because I was on vacation all last week and this week I've been sick with a head cold. Finally got well enough to try Week 6 Day 1 last night and I am very happy to report that I did it! I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to after not having run in almost 2 weeks and still dealing with the tail end of this cold, but I did! It's a big relief to know that I was able to pick up where I left off and I am hoping to sign up for a race for the mid to end of May.

Ran the Redbud Classic today. A respectable 34:38, 7 minutes faster than average. I also came in 26 of 42 in my age group, so I exceeded my goal of not being last. Ran the whole way, no Water or walk breaks. I'm 51 and from nothing to 5K in nine weeks...well I'm excited about the program.

Huge congrats! Sounds like you did awesome! How did you feel at the end? In my past 5K races, nothing could beat that feeling of crossing the finish line!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
