Vacation after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been planning a small vacation over the last few month's for June 18-22. I called my surgeons office the other day to get an estimated time for surgery and they said it looks like it's going to be the last week in April. If so, that's going to put me about 6-7 weeks out from surgery when I go on vacation. Has anyone else traveled this soon out from surgery or sooner? I'm not worried about temptation but more concerned about dehydration as I will be outside for 2 full days as well as concerned about not getting enough to eat. I will be able to carry Water with me and will hopefully be able to carry baby food in my purse to eat throughout the day when nothing else may be available. I also plan on taking Protein Shakes with me. Anyone else go though this that may have advice?

I went on vacation to crazy Las Vegas right on the 6 week post op timeline. I felt absolutely fantastic and had been moved to soft food by the.

I took my Protein shakes with me so I could start my day out right. I am purchased some Quest bars at the suggestion of my doctors office. If I had trouble finding something to eat I would slowly nibble on those Protein Bars. Apple pie and banana nut was my favorite. It has a lot more Protein than baby food. I also purchased light string cheese.

I was there for 10 days and I did extremely well during that time.

I took a 12 day trip to Disney world 8 weeks after surgery and did fine. I made sure to bring my Water and Protein and it was a great trip. As long as you plan well to stay hydrated and get your protein in you should be able to enjoy! Have a great trip.

I am headed to Disney World for 7 days at 8 weeks out. We have the dining plan so we are keeping that but I think I should be ready for it. Any advice would be great...oh, GB...

Oh awesome!! Thank you all for replying! That's making me feel better about my trip and I can't wait now! Just hoping that I don't have any complications with my surgery that will prolong the healing process

We had the dining plan also! It worked out well for us. I only used meal credits at the few buffet and family style meals we had. I tried to minimize those meals because I felt like I was wasting a meal credit for me to eat 1/4 cup of food. The regular restaurants where you order from a menu or the quick service meals I just ate a bit off of my husband's or sons' meals. The servings there are so big and it was never a problem for us. We used the extra credits I didn't need to cover a few extra meals for the family. There are a lot of great choices around that work for us post ops. I also carried Water bottles, Protein packets, etc in our back pack just in case I needed them. snack credits are also great for WLS patients! Lots of healthy choices if you look for them. Our best meals hands down were at O'Hana in the Polynesian Resort and the steak at Be Our Guest (magic Kingdom). My husband is a huge steak man and orders steak a lot when we eat out. The steak at be our guest was AMAZING! I had some of it too and couldn't believe how great it was. You can search for a website called all ears and they have menus posted for almost every restaurant at Disney world. I used that to plan our meals and find the places with the best options for our needs. Have a great time , enjoy the atmosphere, and stay hydrated. You will walk more than you ever thought possible too. We walked between 7.5 to 13 miles each day we were in the parks. I hope I didn't talk your ear off. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions I can help with.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
