Hi. I'm new. This is my first "real" post. I am a nurse and YES I am going to Mexico to have my surgery. After months and months of research, I chose Dr. Ortiz at OCC. I am very excited and nervous! This site has been extremely helpful. I admire everyone's honesty and willingness to support each other.

Hi better-half! We are scheduled the same day with the same Dr!! I'm getting pretty excited as it gets closer! Did you get your instructions yet from our nutritionist? I have to lose 11 pounds pre surgery, little nervous about that. I have 6 pounds still to lose , hope I can get it done !!

Hi Sleeved2015...Nice to meet you! Yes, I did get instructions for the Nutritionist and I also had to lose about 11 pounds. You sound like you are doing better than I am, I have only lost 4lbs. I am nervous, but excited. I have heard great things about Dr. A. Ortiz, so far. Do you have someone going with you for support? My husband will be going down with me. Lets stay in touch!

@@Better-half After completely going off track with Easter dinner I'm afraid to weigh myself lol! I will have to get back into focus from here on out. My husband is traveling with me too, I had to do some major talking to convince him going to Mexico was not only safe but the Dr. I'm using is top in his field. I finally got the copies of our birth certificates mailed to us and tomorrow we have appointments to get our passports so hopefully we won't have any delays receiving them. Where are you traveling from? We are coming from Phoenix AZ. I figured we would drive since it's so close but now I'm considering flying just so we won't have to stop every hour on the way home so I can get out of the car and stretch like the Dr wants. There's not much in between here and California and don't like the idea of just pacing around the car to make sure I don't get blood clots lol!

We are coming from Houston. My husband was a little nervous too, until I had him read up on the reviews, toured the website, and read some of the feedback from this site. We are coming from Houston, so definitely flying. My husband and I are both nurses, so I guess it makes it a little easier...well at least the 'fear of the unknown' factor. The only difference is he wanted to know things like complication rate, infection rates, and success rates. It also helps that he is hispanic, so he can help with translation. He is not completely fluent, but can get by. I was actually in Phoenix, AZ for nursing seminar several months back, very nice, but very dry (for me at least). As for the diet...I will be out of town at the the end of this week, our last vacation until May 15th, so after I am planning on getting serious when we get back on Sunday. I hope that leaves me enough time to lose 11l bs in 4 weeks. Good Luck to you too! I know you can do it. I am happy to have a surgery buddy! :)

Hi better-half! I'm so glad to find someone on the same journey as me! How lucky for you that your husband can help with the language, that would be very helpful! I found information on the OCC website that lists the complication rate and infection rates etc if you haven't already found it. I was very pleased with their reports! This was the main reason I picked Dr. Ortiz out of all the options in Mexico. I also liked the fact that the center is an international center of excellence also very important to help calm the nerves lol! Enjoy your vacation and I guess we will meet in Mexico!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
