I'll be having my surgery at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. My six month supervised diet will be up as of May 21. The wait for getting a surgery date is driving me crazy! I'm ready now!!

I live in Connecticut :)

I went to the cardiologist last week and he said that it should be simple to clear me because I'm young and pretty healthy overall so I go back next week to have an echocardiogram and then 1 clearance down! I have my first nutrition meeting tomorrow but it's a class, not a one on one like I was expecting. Anyone else's program go like that? I really hope that I won't have to wait another 2 weeks to get that appointment!

In other news, I've been tracking and weighing all my food and doing Protein shakes for Breakfast and I've lost a little over 8 pounds since my first consult a couple of weeks ago :D

How are things moving along for everyone?

I was wondering what everyone is doing with their eating habits now? Normal or eating healthier any Protein Shakes ? My nutrionist has me on one Protein Shake and two meals a day just veggies and Protein for dinner. Than in may I go to two shakes a day and one meal . Than June 3 shakes till surgery.

I use myfitnesspal and follow the program's goals for calories, etc. I did adjust the carb goal down trying to get ready for my very low carb pre-op diet. For my weight I am at 1400 calories and am about to move down to about 80 grams of carb a day.

Oh, and I'm in Seattle. : )

Pre op supervised diet with PCP #4 - done :). Slowly getting closer and hoping for a mid June surgery date. scale showed that I had gained 1 pound. I am trying not to gain any weight during the pre-op process for sure, and it would be nice to loose some. My personal goal is 5-10 pounds during prior to surgery.

I am in Auburn, AL.

I picked up my CPAP and used it for the first time last night. It was a lot like sleeping with an octopus on my face, lol, but I am sure it will improve eventually. When I did sleep, it felt like a deeper sleep, so I do think this will be a good thing once I get use to it.

So glad to hear everyone is moving along nicely :).

I've had my cpap for almost a month now, and I had to switch out the nose mask for a nasal pillow. I'm liking that so much better!

I *think* I may be May or June. Hi I am new. 35 year old from IL. I have a wonderful and sweet and funny husband of 13 years. We have two children. My son who is 9 and our daughter who is 3. I would love to join this group to pass the time till my surgery and to make friends who are on the same journey as me. Frist consultation was today and I am hoping I can get all the other required loops holes done within the next month. Fingers crossed!

Twinsies! My 3-month ins-required diet ends 5/12. I've done all the other things needed for approval so as soon as that last report is in from my PCP, surgeon's office says they will submit for approval. Our office is closed June 8 - 15, so I'm hoping for surgery at the beginning of that time. Thought it was a pipe dream, but surgeon's office says it is "quite possible!" Geez, it's hard to type with crossed fingers!!!

Thank you, mclorrie!

I had my Pulmonary Function Test today. Weirdest test I have ever had. Loved the nebulizer hit though. My son was sweet enough to give me his germs and I have had a cough for two weeks now. Now all I have to do is wait for April 20th for my next appointment.

I have my endoscopy on Thursday, I'm a little nervous! I've never been under anesthesia at all, so it'll be a first. The doctor made me feel really comfortable at the consult though, so I'm going to try to relax. Let us know how it goes!

I got my cardiac clearance yesterday, so this train is rollin!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
