Allergic reaction to tape

Recommended Posts

Two days ago I started with a little rash on my belly shaped like a square like the dressing they used on me post op. Yesterday it started spreading (I had 6 of those dressings on my belly) and today itching like crazy. I was told I could take liquid benadryl and use anti-itch cream this morning, but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Anyone else deal with this? If so how long before it went away??

Me! I am allergic to latex and even if the hospital uses latex free bandages there is a small amount of latex in the glue. I used hydrocortisone cream. It took a while ( maybe a week or so) but it eventually went away.

I did. I had NASTY rashes where and even underneath the tape was. I even thought I was going to scar in a couple places, but it does look like they've faded. Just keep taking your Benadryl and wait it out. I think it took a good couple weeks for mine to heal up.

Thanks for the quick replies! Did it spread to your incisions/staples? I guess that's reallly what I'm worried about. Thank goodness I get staples out Wednesday morning!!

I didn't have staples and the steri strips fell off before I got a rash. I only had them on my arm where they tried to get an IV started and on my neck and face because I ended up getting a PICC line instead. If it's a reaction to the tape it shouldn't spread. It will just be where the tape was.

Its spread to where the inside of the bandages were too, not just where the tape was on the outside

I was sleeved on 12/17 and also had reactions to the tape. I actually just dealt with it even though my whole belly is red and itchy. I switched the dressings to hypoallergenic tape and it's made a world of a difference!!!! good luck.

I had stitches, staples and tape. When I would change the dressing and remove the old tape, it felt like I was taking a layer of skin off too! It got very red and irritated. I only covered it because I was afraid the staples would catch on my clothing or sheets in bed. I begged my doctor to remove the staples after 10 days and the tape irritation areas went away after a few days.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
