Hey everyone! How many of you out there are banded teachers?? I would love to trade class stories as well as band stories, and hear how you deal with day to day band business as well as a classroom full of kids!

I have been teaching English as a foreign language in Portugal for the past 2 years, and I was a substitute teacher for 3 years before that. (I did it while I was completing my BS at university) I have just accepted a 7th grade Reading position in Haines City, FL and I'm looking forward to it! I'm planning on getting my reading endorsement and hopefully by next year, I'm going to enroll in a masters program for educational leadership at USF.

My band business hasn't been on track like it should be. But I'm hoping the structured schedule from the school will help me keep my eating on track. The school I'm teaching at now has weird hours since it's a private school and we teach outside of regular school hours. (I teach until 10pm every night!) and I can't wait to get away from this and into a normal schedule!

Well, I hope there are other teachers out there I would love to hear from you!

My adult ESL students told me I looked 'tin' today. I said "pardon?" and they indicated 'thin' with their hand gestures. The entire class then started talking in their own languages and I could here [ChineseChineseFACEChineseChinese]. So I gather they have noticed that my face is thinner. I told them I was going to the gym and they heartily approved.

Can't remember if I've posted in this thread...but I'm a high school special education teacher. We've been back to school since late last month. I just had my surgery this past Friday and will be going back to work tomorrow! I'm nervous about the gas part of this...LOL

hi Kimmie, I'm a SP.Ed high school teacher too.

I know we've discussed this before but I'm trying to decide when to go back to work. I was banded on Tuesday, and planned to go back on Monday. At this point I don't know if that's a good idea. Since I do high school I have to move classrooms every 50 minutes. I can usually rest during the actual classes since I'm co-teaching this year but getting through the halls and handling the stairs is a little scarry to me at this point. Any advice????

I'm not sure whether this was an NSV or not. I have lost a fair bit of weight and all my clothes are loose. I went to the kitchenette and the back of the classroom to get some water and my pants fell down! A few of my students saw I think but they did a good job pretending that they didn't. How embarrassing (in a cool way). Needless to say, I bought some safety pins on the way home.

I actually had my surgery on a Friday and returned to work on Monday. I've got my own classroom this year, so there wasn't a lot of moving around. Though, I was really careful when I did have to go in the hallways, I just kept my distance from the children.

Awe!!! Poor thing with the pants falling down! Mine slip on occassion, but my butt still holds them up! LOL Maybe one day I'll be that lucky...for them to be THAT loose!

I teach adults,though. I taught in Central America for 7 years and 8 in the Sates. I showed the picture of the band to my students. We can share lesson plans too!!!

Jelbel, I am also an adult ESL teacher but am also the manager now. I love the teaching part, the managing - not so much. I teach in Australia but I did live/study in Chile for a year when I was younger. Am thinking about going to Germany, Austria or Spain to teach this year so I can do the overseas thing (have EU passport too, luckily). Where in Central America did you teach?

Wow! I'm glad to see this thread took off. I have been so busy with my move back to the US from Portugal. I was an ESL teacher in Portugal for 2 years. I taught all ages, children to adults. I now teach 8th grade Reading in Florida. But I'm thinking of moving to 5th grade next year.

ESL teachers you may already know this website, but www.onestopenglish.com is a great resource. They have free lesson plans and printable flash cards. My school has a Tuesday Night Family Night and I actually teach parents of my students who don't speak English and I am always using that site.

I teach math at a community college. I'm an adjunct so I don't work full time, though I have four classes this semester, including one about 45 minutes away. I also tutor on campus. And I've been doing contract work for a textbook company so this has been a busy fall!

I don't have to worry about discipline if I have to leave class, since my students are all adults, but it would be embarrassing, especially if it was in the middle of my lecture. So I plan to be extra careful about what I eat right before class! There's a refrigerator just down the hall from my office.

I teach Monday through Thursday. My department chair has given me permission to cancel class on Thursday, the day I'm having surgery, and Monday, and my first class Tuesday is at 6 p.m. so I should have enough time. Also, the time changes next weekend so I get another hour!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the group and was excited to see this thread for teachers. I teach high school special education. I was banded June 19th, 2007 (Gotta love summer break). So far I'm down 60lbs. I too find the eating at school difficult. I'm at 2.25cc of fill and if I don't eat slow enough it can be quite painful. I try to stick to crackers, cottage cheese, and cheese sticks at work. It seems to be the easiest with the time constraints.

I am a severe disabilities teacher in Florida. I have an all autistic classroom. All of the students in my class are non-verbal. I was really worried about going back to work b/c of the aggression that they exhibit, but it has been just fine. I am sooo thankful!

I taught in Panama and lived there for 12 years. I also speak Spanish,Dutch,Papimentu,a little Hebrew and French.

I have my own classroom and I only teach adults. I'm also a translator.

My surgery is on Nov. 5th and I'm going back to work on the 14th. I am allowed to work on my translations,so at least I won't be bored.

I'm going to teach in Spain and/or Germany next year. I will definitely visit Portugual too. I feel so much more confident now the weight's coming off and going to do all the things I missed in my 20s.

Hey.. Karla!!! Great to see you finally got on the site. When I told everyone about it at the support meeting and then went on it later Saturday and it was down for the day, I was really disappointed. I hoped everyone that tried the site would realize I didn't give a bad url!!!
