Dr. Ponce de Leon in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi. Newbie here. About to take that last step to a new life. Gastric bypass with Dr. De Leon in December. Anyone have any feedback on this Doctor? Bypass Or otherwise it doesn't matter. Talk to me? Going alone. Nervous.

I went to Dr verboonen in Tijuana and never felt uneasy. His team took very good care of me. When is your surgery?

I'm scheduled for VSG with him on 12/9. TBH, I'm getting a little nervous because I heard how quick Trish (the coordinator) gets back to you, and how much support she is on the ground in Mexico... and I'm not experiencing the quick getting back to you part; wondering what the support on the ground is like since they seem very busy now.

That said - I've got everything else in place, so as long as someone picks me up at the airport - I figure the rest will work itself out.

I went with the bariatric pal contact David Lopez. So far he has been great. I have been able to reach him at any time. My friend said Dr Leon would have been her choice if self paying but I can't find any overwhelming testimonials thus far. I don't think bariatric pal would recommend someone with bad stats but I was hoping to hear from folk like me. My surgery is for the 15th of December but I may ask to have it moved up just because my nerves are a mess, thanks for asking Janice1968.

Hey!! Scstxrn my birthday is December 9th. Please let me know how it is there. Let's be loser buddies??

Sounds like a plan. Early happy birthday. Mine just passed. I too wish I could just go now. I have calmed my nerves by focusing on getting things in place.. I have five diff Protein supplements to try, I am walking at least half a mile a day and taking stairs... Taking Vitamins, bought loungers for Mexico... Cause I don't want to be that patient in scrubs at the hospital.

I have been using Protein supplements since August. Unjury products and service so far is the truth! Their chicken Soup makes me feel like I ate! I should be walking more. Nuts. I will be the obe in hospital scrubs. LOL. I don't care if it hurts and I am not feeling well? Get outta my way. Plus I will be so glad I made it thru surgery yet again - 4 c-sections - that I just don't care how I look.

All good. I like unjury too... chocolate splendor in a cup of Decaf feels like desert. I like Nashua Nutrition's pink lemonade liquid too.. I will be taking that to Mexico with me.

Regarding wearing scrubs at the hospital - I have to wear them at work every night; I don't want to dress like a nurse when I'm the patient. I'm digging the loungers, though.

I'm a little worried about getting cold after surgery - I'm looking forward to the side effect, but at the same time I'm not bringing a jacket because I don't *GET* gold until it's 40 degrees, windy, and I'm in the shade. I'm only bringing one bag, since I'm traveling alone and I have to carry it.

I wish you were having your surgery at the same time.. it would be nice to know someone ahead of time who's there with me. I'm leaving my husband home to take care of the kids. :)

My insurance doesn't pay for any type of weight loss surgery. I don't have $25,000 onhand. I have been researching having it done in Mexico because I could afford that without financing. I finally told my husband and he freaked out. He said I can't have it done there and that I was insane. He is the only family I have. My parents and sister are deceased. I see that there are fully accredited hospitals and physicians there. How bad can it be?

Another option is to stay in the U.S. and travel to have it done in Dallas or Las Vegas.

The prices there are comparable to some of the Mexican options at approx 10 to 12k.

I went to dr Ponce and found the care better than I would have gotten in my hometown. The flight sucked. For that reason as well as his other health issues, my husband is going to dr Kim in Dallas. Because he has a hernia and medical insurance will cover fixing that, he can have the sleeve done at the same time for Tijuana prices.

That said, if I were doing it over, I would go right back to dr Ponce, dr oscar, and trish

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
