How does your body react when you eat something your sleeve doesn't agree with yet?

Recommended Posts

7 days post op today. I am supposed to be on Clear liquids until I see my doctor (Thursday).. However I was super tired of my four options (Water, broth, sf Jello and Protein shakes) so I thought I would step out the box and strain some of my moms chicken Soup. After I drank it maybe 20 minutes, I felt my vision go fuzzy (I could see but there was "noise" in my vision) and my head began to hurt. I took my pain meds and took my blood pressure which read normal. Anyone else have this happen before? I'm wondering if this is my body telling me something in the Soup, I'm not ready for yet.

Any thoughts? How does your body react?

Luckily I didn't vomit, but I had some horrible "dumping" experiences early on. you dunno wanna know what that is like.

My sleeve was Dec 11, 2011. Think Christmas. The whole family is eating a delicious meal I prepared and I am still on "full liquids" meaning Protein drinks. i decide to treat myself to adding a big ole scoop of Peanut Butter to my Protein Drink...omg.... I spent the day in the bathroom with diarrea and cramps and the shakes and everything. It was awful..

The best advice I ever heard was to treat your new sleeve like a newborn baby... be gentle...error on the side of caution...

The Soup had chicken pumpkin, celery, carrots, peppers... Nothing bad by any means and I strained it out. Do you guys think my stomach didn't agree with that or there's something else going on?

Oh and potatoes...

pumpkin, potatoes and carrots are all Starch = carbs..... Celery is way to fiberous and peppers? Too soon for a post op diet I would say. If it had just been chicken broth you might have been ok. Even tho you 'strained' the Soup, those other ingredients were in there.

Hmmm very interesting. Thank you for your response. Hopefully I can move on to some more options soon because Clear Liquids is killing me slowly

The sleeve is my new baby. Oh my god. Today I finally accepted the fact that I can't eat any type of bread. Every time I ate any type I would always get stuck and it would give me the worst pains! Whole wheat bread, pita bread you name it. I can't. So yeah. Please listen to your doctor and even tho you get tired try to stick to it. I was sleeves August 4th. Good luck

I would say it's just the Soup. Regroup and go back to the liquids. Even when starting on puréed foods that new sleeve will be picky picky picky.

You and it may not agree on everything for quite a while and sadly it will win! But in the end ... You will.

Good luck on your next try.

Peanut Butter was the first food that made me vomit post op. I was just eating a little tiny bit on its own, and my body rejected it. Oh how I used to love peanut butter

I learned the hard way to introduce new foods very cautiously. I tried Jerky and I drank too soon and I slimed. It was so gross! I moved Jerky to the bottom of the food list to be reintroduced later. I had my sleeve Aug 26 and had no problems at all until then. Follow your doctors orders to the letter because he has done a lot of these operations and knows a whole lot more about it than any of us. Sorry you felt bad but go back to your prescribed diet.

The slimmies.... Hate it! I seem to be lucky with being able to eat almost anything, BUT I find if I over eat I have that reaction. I am trying to learn what my FULL tummy signal is. I think i am still eating too fast and my tummy does not register full until after the fact. I must admit though that beef (other then hamburger) does give me pause and I eat very little of steak, roast meat, etc. If I eat too much, here comes the wonderful slimmies. I was driving my car the other day and had to pull over and spit! WOW.

How far post op are you? I'm wondering how long after surgery before I can try red meats again....

I haven't had any vomiting or dumping situations, but I did stick pretty religiously to the plan for the first several months after surgery. I have since then had a few things that were maybe too sugary or carb-laden and I get nauseous, but not to the point of throwing up.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
