great site to research surgeons in Mexico

Recommended Posts

I found this site to be very helpful. Its kind of concerning that Dr. Kelley has been excused from various hospitals. I thought that was good to know. Just my thought. Anyway here is the link (LINK DELETED BY SITE ADMIN)

I would be curious to know who the "we" is behind the site. There doesn't seem to be any information about who is compiling the information and they've used a private domain registration. And they sell advertising to surgeons and bariatric centers. Just things to keep in mind when using the site.

Good point so I asked them. I will let you know if I get a response.

I wonder who "we" is , too. And it certainly isn't a very complete list of bariatric surgeons. I can think of 6 off the top of my head that aren't even mentioned...Ariel Ortiz, Elias Ortiz, Aceves, Almanza, Quinones, and Martinez. I actually had my surgery done with Dr. A Ortiz and Dr. Martinez in December 2013 with an easy recover and outstanding results.

I had my surgery in TJ Mexico with Dr. Almanza in July 2014 , and have had no complications. :-)

I tried it and yes, this is promotional site! Very sneaky!

Slick and unprofessional IMHO.

I felt the same way. I couldn't not understand how my doctor was rated a 3/5 so I sent an inquiry. I was disgusted to see the response:

Thank you for contacting the office of Dr. alejandro lopez and Dr. Jacqueline Osuna, Specialized Bariatrics, Inc.

One of our staff at Specialized Bariatrics, Inc. will contact you shortly.

About Surgery in Mexico

I had lapband in Tijuana Mex. And I had it removed in Tijuana Mex and had Sleeve in St Pete, FL

Unless you live right on the border and getting to Mexico is cheap and easy, avoid it.

If you have lapband, which need constant fills and adjustments really avoid it.

Live close to your surgeon. And Support group. Between travel and complications you are not saving money. Eso now the WLS is covered by insurance more and more.

There are good drs in Tijuana and the facilities are clean and nice. But for me it was 4 plane rides round trip and my local doctors decided after I had surgery not to do fills for "Mexican" Patients. Took me 3 days to get a 10 sec fill and no way to know if it was really correct.

Personally I would advise against band for sleeve in general. Band has a lot of adjustments. Having had both.

My doctor Ortiz was very good. But when my band slipped because my fills were so difficult to get I had to pay again for surgery for the fix and pay again for surgery to have the whole thing removed because I threw up everything I ate.

I could have had it locally for what I paid. (Before it was covered by insurance) and getting a revision covered by insurance is not that easy either.

I would love to have dental done and other things in Mex, but since I live in St Pete and not San Diego, I have to avoid long distance medical procedures.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
